Thought for the moment…
1 Peter 2:17 “Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.”
It is so easy to like nice people. It is also easy to pray for kind and generous people. It is easy to be friendly to those who genuinely care for those about them. And it is easy to stand in support of those who promote and support justice, righteousness, mercy, and truth.
Praying for these individuals, honoring these individuals, blessing and encouraging these individuals, is just so easy. But sometimes, the Bible instructs us to do that which is NOT very easy or pleasant.
At the time that Peter is writing this letter to the believers, the current Caesar in Rome, was Nero. He was NOT a nice guy. Neither was he just, moral, compassionate, righteous, or any other positive adjective or attribute. He was an all around BAD person as well as a BAD leader.
Yet, Peter admonishes the believers to honor the king. And not just the king but ALL men. It is easy to love the brotherhood most of the time, but these other folks, it can be extremely difficult to find compassion in one’s heart for such calloused, compromised, and cruel people.
The only way that we can do any of this “loving” stuff successfully, is if we follow his other admonition, which is to Honor and Love God FIRST. If your Love for God is in place, it will have a Positive impact on your entire heart and your ability to love others.
It is the Love of God in our hearts that gives us the capacity to honor our leaders, regardless of their character flaws. Nothing is going to change in the hearts of those that embrace the darkness, unless the light of Jesus Christ shines forth upon their hearts. This requires much prayer from the saints.
Paul made a similar declaration to Timothy when he said, “I exhort you therefore, that first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for ALL men, for kings and for ALL those in authority. That you might live a quiet and peaceful life with all godliness and honesty.”
(1 Timothy 2:1-2)
Raw Criticism rarely has a positive impact on anyone. Prayer on the other hand, has the potential to transform people from the inside out. This is why we are encouraged to pray, intercede, and stand in the gap for those in authority.
I believe it is the Christians duty to use their God-given rights to vote for the best people available. There are no “saints” in politics. Some may start off as “saints”, but after a while, many of them end up being “ain’ts”. This is why we have to pray.
James encouraged the believers that, “The effectual fervent prayer of the righteous avails MUCH!” (James 5:16)
Paul encourages the Thessalonians to “Pray without ceasing.”
(1 Thessalonians 5:17)
Jesus declared to His followers, “Men ought ALWAYS to pray and not to lose heart.“ (Luke 18:1)
The scripture is full of the prayers of the righteous who did not give up, turn back, or let go of the promises of God. When there were obstacle, challenges, and difficulties, the people would pray and God would move on their behalf.
We live in a divided nation. All the voices are pointing to all the problems that surround us. I cannot help, but wonder if all of the energy used to point out problems was transformed into praying for the leaders, what the outcome would be?
I often find myself praying for people I do not necessarily like or believe in, in spite of their stance for principles and policies that are unBiblical and destructive to family values. But God did not instruct his people to protest, he instructed his people to pray, to intercede, and to “Stand in the gap before Him, for the land, that He might not destroy it”. (Ezekiel 22:30)
How often do we find ourselves sitting and listening to those who point out all of the difficult issues but never stop to pray for their leaders? Are we willing to be part of the solution which involves prayer and intercession for our leaders?
Or do we simply want to stand and point fingers at the problems, throw stones at the leaders, and curse those in office because of their unrighteous acts?
We do not need another revolution in America in order to get things back on track. What we need in America is a “Transformational Revival”, a “Great Awakening”, a Tangible invasion of Holy Spirit in our nation.
This will not come while standing at the ballot box. This will ONLY come while kneeling at the cross and interceding for our leaders and our nation.
May we purpose today to join those who are willing to pray for God to move in the hearts of our leaders, and upon the hearts of our fellow citizens.
Let us endeavor today to be part of the solution by taking time to Pray MORE and criticize Less. Prayer will accomplish much more than criticism ever could. May we begin to pray more today in Jesus Name! Have a blessed day, my friend.🎚️🙏🎚️🌞🎚️
