Last night (we believe) the Mt Tabor church door was busted open and a few items were taken. The old flag and the Christian flag were taken, but they left the flag poles and the wrought iron stands. Several hymnals were stolen, a 40’s Hull planter, and worst of all a plastic tub of historical documents about the church and cemetery. Missing items include the Ladies Aide minutes, old church board meeting minutes, old pictures of basket dinners, and some information about the graveyard. A sheriffs report has been filed but if anyone saw anything related to this, please let us know by private message. This same thing happened in Nov 21 but very little was disturbed.

Last fall this was uncovered under some brush on the north east section of the cemetery. We would like to place it in the correct place but we do not know where it’s home is. It could be an infants marker.

Happy to share that Mt Tabor church foundation and front concrete project is complete. We were also able to protect the church from termites and replace the foundation vents to prevent animals, snakes, and hornets from getting in the crawl space. Thanks to Kathy Ferren for the beautiful stone bench that is placed south of the church. Thanks to numerous volunteers that have helped clean up the cemetery and uncover some old graves.

Over 20 people assisted in a much needed cemetery cleanup yesterday. Several tombstones were straightened, brush removed, limbs of tree cut, etc. A big THANK YOU to nine members of the women’s EIU basketball team for giving to our community.

Don’t forget our work day tomorrow at the church and cemetery. We will have volunteers from the EIU women’s basketball team assisting!

If you know any families of loved ones buried at the cemetery please let them know. There is no electricity, water, or bathroom (you can’t use the outhouse, sorry). Bring tools, gloves, and wear work clothes. There will be plenty of small jobs that don’t require too much physical labor but the majority of the work to be done is moving brush to allow easier cemetery mowing.

Progress is being made on the foundation repairs and front concrete.

We are sad to report that sometime between Saturday evening and Sunday morning Mt Tabor church was vandalized.
Access to the church was obtained by knocking in the doors, causing damage to both doors. The old United States flag was taken (as shown in this picture). There was no other damage or known stolen items. A big thanks to Mark McGrath for quickly fixing the doors before more damage could occur. We are asking everyone to please keep an open eye out for suspicious activity at the church and cemetery. The incident has been reported to the Coles County Sheriffs department.
