Saint Mark's Episcopal Church

Saint Mark's Episcopal Church Saint Mark's Episcopal Church is an historic church, located in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina. The first service was held on Easter Sunday in 1865.

We welcome all to join us for our Sunday service at 10:00 am. Saint Mark's Episcopal Church was organized as an independent parish in 1865 by a group of devout Black Episcopalians who found themselves without a place to worship at the end of the Civil War. Saint Mark's Episcopal Church has stood witness to rich human stories, changing times, and even challenging weather. At its core, Saint Mark's

has always remained committed to being a faith community of unconditional acceptance, driven by the command of Christ to "love one another as I have loved you."

What if your value wasn't based on your performance?

So many people carry the weight of feeling like they're never enough.

This message challenges that assumption.

The idea that acceptance comes before achievement changes everything.

Sometimes the thing we need most is the thing we've spent years trying to earn.

Can you explain Godβ€”or do you simply recognize God in the moments that change you?

This week's sermon took a hard look at grace, love, and the kind of community that can survive disagreement.

The surprising takeaway: maybe faith starts with experience, not explanations. Where have you experienced unexpected grace lately?

You can doubt and still show up.

Fr. Michael Shaffer explores the Gospel Matthew 28:16–20 β€” how Jesus meets people who worship, wonder, hesitate, and still have a next step. On Trinity Sunday, faith gets less polished and more honest. This Sunday at 10 AM, in person or online.

Peace is not a mood.

In 2 Corinthians 13:11–13, Paul names peace as something we practice: repair, encouragement, showing up differently together. On Trinity Sunday, that feels less like an idea and more like a way through. This Sunday at 10 AM, in person or online.

No pressure. Just presence.

Stopping isn't failure.

Genesis begins with making, naming, blessing β€” and then rest. On Trinity Sunday, the first story reminds us that pause is not a reward for finishing everything. It is built into being human. This Sunday at 10 AM, in person or online.

Come breathe a little.

What if the thing holding the Church back right now isn't the culture β€” it's our own fear?

Fr. Michael Shaffer preached straight into that question this Pentecost Sunday at Saint Mark's Episcopal in Charleston. The disciples hid behind locked doors after the resurrection. They already knew. They were just afraid.

Some things don't change. What are you personally most afraid to say out loud right now?

The first thing he said when he walked through the door was peace.

Not explanation. Not "I told you so." Just β€” peace.

Fr. Michael Shaffer explores John 20:19–23 and what it means to receive something you didn't think you deserved.

There's a version of rest that only comes when you stop pretending you're in charge.

Psalm 104 is an inventory of everything that exists without your input β€” sea creatures, seasons, breath itself. It might be exactly what this week needs.

This Sunday at 10 AM, in person or online.
