Meet the new pastor of Francis Brown AME!
The Rev. Dr. Herbert Laval Jenkins, Sr. has been preaching and teaching the gospel since 2004. Dr. Jenkins achieved his Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the College of Charleston, a Master’s of Divinity with Honors from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta GA., and a Doctorate of Ministry Summa Cum Laude, from Drew University, in Maddison, New Jersey, where his dissertation focused on “The Elephant in the Room: Analyzing and Restructuring Congregational and Clergy Anger”.
Reverend Jenkins has served on several committees for the Palmetto and South Carolina Annual Conferences including Church Growth, Chair of Church Planting, Christian Education, and Young Adult Ministry Chair. He has also served as Annual Conference Secretary for the South Carolina conference. Dr. Jenkins also devotes time to Owens Christian Academy, where he is a PTA Executive Board Member serving as the Chaplain. In this role, he holds Chapel Services and ministers to the students, faculty, and staff, arranges worship services, and provides emotional support to those in need of it.
Dr Jenkins has had the distinct honor and privilege of serving the membership of St. Paul AME, in Kingstree, St. Luke AME in downtown Hollywood, Holy Trinity AMEC in Mount Pleasant, and now serves as the servant pastor of Francis Brown AME. He also dedicates his time serving as a mentor for Young Adult Pastors of the Seventh District. Dr. Jenkins has humbly received honors and awards for his service and dedication to the community such as the National Black Pages Top 20 Under 40, the Charleston Area National Black Caucus’ 40 Pros to Know the Connectional RAYAC Forty under Forty-ish award, and Turner Theological Seminary’s 2025 Hall of Fame. Dr Jenkins is also a member of the 2024 cohort of the Order of the Flame.
Dr Jenkins is dedicated to spiritual growth and development and speaks on many platforms involving his ministry passions: Anger, Indignation, emotional and spiritual wholeness, and Relationships. He is a preacher, teacher, expositor, and presenter, who enjoys engaging people of all walks of life.
Dr Jenkins is blessed with four beautiful children: Janae LaShon, Herbert LaVal II, Anderson LaMal and, Myles LaCroix. Above all his accomplishments, he puts God before all things, living out the scripture that states All things work together for those who love the Lord, those who are called for His purpose (Romans 8:28). He is a man who both serves and loves the LORD.
