St. John's member Lewis Moore recently spent twelve days in coastal Peru with Home Works, a non-profit based in Columbia, South Carolina. While there, the Home Works team built nine homes. One went to a family of four who had been living in a tent for over a year. Another house, sponsored by St. John's, went to a young couple and their children who had been living in a cramped house with their in-laws, who were asked to find their own home by the end of summer.

If you would like to learn more about getting involved with Home Works - either locally or internationally - ask Lewis Moore or a member of our Social Ministry committee.

We had a great day at Spirited Brunch yesterday! Well over 200 visitors came through to sample German cookies and sweets and tour our historic church building.

Thanks to all the bakers at St. John's, and those volunteers who dedicated a beautiful Sunday afternoon (the weather was PERFECT) to sharing our story with Charleston!

Don't forget to join us this Sunday as we join other Charleston area houses of worship for Spirited Brunch. This "self-guided snack tour of downtown Charleston’s prayerful spaces" is a wonderful way to see the city and learn about its rich cultural heritage.

We'll be on the portico from 12:30 to 3:30, serving an array of German cookies.

Join us on Thursday, April 23, at 7:00 PM in our historic sanctuary as Dr. Susan McArver presents the second in our lecture series honoring the 250th anniversary of the founding of our nation.

Her topic is, “'Endowed by their Creator with Certain Unalienable Rights'”: Religion, Revolution and South Carolina."

This lecture will discuss the religious situation in South Carolina and other colonies in the years leading up to the American Revolutionary War and discuss ways in which changes in the religious outlook encouraged new ways of thinking about kings and authority.

Dr. Susan Wilds McArver is the H. George Anderson Professor of Church History, Emerita, at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. She received her B.A. from Salem College, M.A.R. from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, and Ph.D. from Duke University in American Religious History.

She currently chairs the Board of Directors of the James R. Crumley Jr Archives of Region 9 and has served in a number of capacities at the churchwide level of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She is also a past President of the Lutheran Historical Conference, a professional
organization of church historians and archivists from the ELCA, Missouri Synod and Wisconsin
Synod.
