SMALL THOUGHTS ABOUT GOD PRODUCE ONE THING YOU DON'T EXPECT

Picture God in your mind right now. If He's small, praise will be quiet. If He's huge and mighty, praise flows naturally.

When we believe God exists to keep us comfortable, the first hard season or diagnosis has us questioning whether He's even worthy. Monday we're singing that God is so, so good. Wednesday the bad news lands and we're asking, God, where are You? I thought You were good.

God is a King you never reach the bottom of. Angels worship Him. His words made worlds. There was nothing, then He spoke, and there was light. His wisdom never fails, His holiness has no shadow, and His throne has no rival.

Kings, presidents, and generals are making battle plans today, knowing lives will be lost. There's a war raging inside you too. God sits high and lifted up over all of it, not surprised by any of it, and He knows exactly where you are right now.

Small thoughts about God leave us with quiet praise. When we see Him clearly, we reach out to Him for help, and we praise louder. We do not need better music nearly as much as we need a clearer vision of God. How big is God in your mind?

STOP TREATING GOD LIKE A CONSULTANT

Most of us still want God in our lives. We've just handed Him a smaller job than He asked for.

Watch the order we build in. We make the plans, we choose the destination, we set the timeline, and then we ask God to bless the project. We've often reduced God to a consultant.

God is not the finishing touch on what we've built. He's the foundation beneath it, He's the strength inside of it, and He's the Lord over it.

Two questions worth sitting with: Who gets to define success in your life? Can God interrupt your plan or redirect your schedule?

There's a real difference between praying, "God, bless what I'm building," and praying, "God, what do You want me to build?"

Build dependently. Put your hands to work, and leave the results in God's hands.

WHY YOU CAN'T SOLVE YOUR BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH DISCIPLINE

We tell ourselves the same thing in a hundred quiet ways: collect enough information, build enough technology, discipline ourselves enough, control enough variables, and perhaps we can finally solve the problem.

Taking care of your body is good. Exercise, real food, sleep, and medical research are gifts, so if God has given you a body, steward it well.

The trouble starts when we look at ourselves as if we're only a biological problem, as if death is one more variable we can get under control.

Moses says the problem goes much, much deeper than biology. What's really wrong with us is spiritual, and that's the thing discipline can't fix.

You may improve your health, extend your life by a few years, lower your cholesterol, and strengthen your heart. But you cannot supplement your way out of judgment, and you cannot exercise your way out of the grave.
