Red shouldered Hawk? Red tailed Hawk maybe? No! That’s the back of a magnificent fish-eating raptor commonly spotted hovering over Lowcountry waters and nesting atop local utility poles. The fantastic Osprey.
Google says, “Ospreys are incredibly successful anglers, securing catches on up to 70% of their dives. They will hover up to 200 feet in the air before plunging feet-first, often fully submerging themselves to grab a fish.”
“Unlike most hawks, they possess a reversible outer toe, allowing them to grasp prey with two toes in front and two in back. Barbed pads on their soles act like Velcro to grip slippery fish.”
“When flying away with their catch, Ospreys will pivot the fish so it faces headfirst, drastically reducing wind resistance.”
