Philosophy of CatholicIU

Ex corde ecclesiae and CatholicIU

The Catholic Church has been operating universities for a thousand years and was involved in education for a thousand years before that. When John Paul II issued the apostolic constitution Ex corde ecclesiae (15 August 1990), he restated the tradition and experience of the Church as it relates to Catholic universities. He explained the r

ole of faith in the working of the faculty, staff, and students. He also set down how research and teaching are illuminated by faith. The university is an intellectual community but it is intellectual in a uniquely Catholic way because it respects the truth. As Pope Benedict XVI said: "Only in faith can truth become incarnate and reason truly human, capable of directing the will along the path of freedom" (cf. It is this faith that nourishes and guides the Catholic university and makes it a genuine intellectual community. Catholic International University takes Ex corde ecclesiae as its guiding light. The Principles That Guide Us

“Every Catholic university, as a university, is an academic community which, in a rigorous and critical fashion, assists in the protection and advancement of human dignity and of a cultural heritage through research, teaching and various services offered to the local, national and international communities” (art.12).

“Since the objective of a Catholic university is to assure in an institutional manner a Christian presence in the university world confronting the great problems of society and culture, every Catholic university, as Catholic, must have the following essential characteristics:
[1] A Christian inspiration not only of individuals but of the university community as such;
[2] A continuing reflection in the light of the Catholic faith upon the growing treasury of human knowledge, to which it seeks to contribute by its own research;
[3] Fidelity to the Christian message as it comes to us through the Church;
[4] An institutional commitment to the service of the people of God and of the human family in their pilgrimage to the transcendent goal which gives meaning to life” (art. 13). The Motto of Catholic International University

The motto of CIU is Joy from the Truth, gaudium de veritate. John Paul II described Catholic universities as coming from the heart of the Church in his Apostolic Constitution Ex corde ecclesiae. He stated that “[a Catholic university] shares that gaudium de veritate, so precious to St. Augustine, which is that joy of searching for, discovering and communicating truth in every field of knowledge.”
(See St. Augustine, Confessions, X, xxiii, 33, quoted in Ex corde ecclesiae, art. 1)

Last week, Catholic International University was honored to help cofound, cohost, and cosponsor the inaugural Dawson Seminar in partnership with the Department of Catholic Studies at the University of St. Thomas.

The seminar brought together scholars to study Religion and the Rise of Western Culture by Christopher Dawson, the influential 20th-century historian who held the Chauncey Stillman Chair in Catholic Studies at Harvard University.

We were especially proud to have several Catholic International faculty members contribute to the seminar's lively discussions and roundtable presentations, including Dr. David Bonagura Jr, Dr. Alex Lessard, Dr. R. Jared Staudt, PhD, and Dr. Ann Brodeur.

A special thank you to the Wethersfield Institute for its support of this important initiative. It was a privilege to welcome Chauncey Stillman's grandson to the seminar, where he joined the conversations and enjoyed the proceedings alongside participants.

Early this week, Pope Leo XIV released his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas (“Magnificent Humanity”), which addresses the dignity of the human person in the age of artificial intelligence. As a fully online, technology-forward university, we are grateful for the Holy Father’s guidance as the Church continues to engage thoughtfully with emerging technologies.

At Catholic International University, we are committed not only to utilizing AI and other emerging technologies responsibly, but also to forming leaders, developers, and users who can approach these tools with prudence, and a deep respect for human dignity.

A reflection for Catholic Developers.

Pope Leo XIV’s new encyclical Magnifica Humanitas addresses some topics that many Catholic technology executives and product developers have been either wrestling with or growing indifferent to: It’s not possible to bolt ethics onto AI well after the business model and the technology have been formed. We need to frame them in from the start. The Pope calls this kind of careful, forward-thinking approach, which at CatholicIU we call “prudential design.”

The Pope makes a bold call for “prudence, rigorous evaluation and even, at times, a slower pace in adopting AI.” This demanding, ethical standard stings a little in an industry obsessed with speed, but when you understand that human welfare is at great risk, it’s the only wise course of action. Sometimes the right move is to slow down, widen your aperture of concern, so we don’t release technology that weakens people’s interior capacities in the process for mere material reasons. We must restore our understanding of the immaterial and instrumental goods that St. Thomas Aquinas so generously explicated.

Every design choice we make sends a message to the world. This brutal reality should make every developer pause and recollect, rectifying their profession with their faith. Are we building technology that treats people as monetizable and nudge-able collections of neurotransmitters, or as ensouled persons with great dignity?

We must design systems focused on the “always interiorly developing” human person, rather than on business metrics alone. According to a Catholic understanding of anthropology, the human person possesses capacities that can be directed either toward authentic human goods or toward lesser ends.

Catholics involved in the development of new technologies have a privileged role in the world. They are able to shape technology that either lifts the human person higher or quietly compromises their natural dignity while undermining their God-given capacities.
