What a magical week we had in Puerto Rico! We’ve spent this past week back reflecting on the fun memories we made, bonds that were formed, and encounters with God we experienced. Thank you to each and every person who made this trip possible, our Wesley students are forever grateful for your generosity.

This morning we woke up and started the day by writing thoughtful notes to each other to open when the trip ends. Then we hopped in the vans and headed over to Barrio Obrero to visit Pastora Nilka. We were welcomed into the church with an impromptu salsa lesson. There we split into teams, with some students painting the exterior fence and others making sandwiches to give out to community members in need. Others packaged bags of food to give out this week to the community. We then concluded with a goodbye fiesta! We had a wonderful dinner with members of the congregation in the parking lot and were treated with a performance of traditional Puerto Rican dance💃. We ended the day watching the UNC game and afterwords we had some quiet reflection time in the grass because what was that.🫠

We got up bright and early this morning in Vieques to get started with some painting work. Students split into groups at the Methodist camp, making quick work of the outer fence and exterior walls, while another group headed to the beach to collect trash and clean up the area. Afterward, we rushed back to catch the ferry to Bayamón, making it just in time to board. Tonight, a group of students visited Old San Juan and explored Castillo San Felipe del Morro, while the rest went out for virgin piña coladas🍹. We had a great day and are closing things out strong tomorrow.☀️

Today, we began the morning with some awesome team building games! After some morning feeding ministry service, we took on Vieques for some Big Wesley fun! After a long drive and a choppy ferry ride (as well as some car troubles 🫠), we made it to our Methodist camp home in the city of Esperanza! After some more exploring, a delicious dinner, and a night visit to the beach, we visited the bioluminescent waters of the island! Our team had a great time experiencing the unique beauties of God’s creation. We are all excited to serve as the hands and feet of God on Vieques tomorrow as we paint, before heading back to Baymón!

Today we were excited to start our first full day of work in Puerto Rico!! One half of our group spent the day doing exterior painting at IMOFA. We were able to paint the entire back half of the church before the end of the workday!! As a reward, we had fun throwing frisbee in the IMOFA lawn and enjoying each other’s company!!

Today God called us in two different directions. One group went to paint the outside of a low income nursing home. The residents loved watching us paint! Then on the way back home, we walked down a creek trail to a hidden waterfall! Later one of our chaperones Alexa, who is a trained occupational therapist student, gave a community talk about female health that our students were allowed to listen in on as well. Later in the night we were surprised with a trip to get ice cream! What a great day! 🍦🎨🖌️

Today we were excited to spend our first full day in Puerto Rico. The day started in the sanctuary, in which our students participated in a dual-language church service with our friends from IMOFA. Shoutout to Ellis, Abigail, and Sean who participated in the praise band, as well as Kelsey who delivered a thoughtful and moving sermon. After church, we had a delicious lunch of hotdogs and hamburgers before heading to the beach. Winds of more than 20mph couldn’t stop us as the group had fun throwing frisbee in the water and lounging in the sand. We rounded out the day with a quick visit to Old San Juan, followed by dinner at food trucks built into shipping containers. Tomorrow we are looking forward to getting to work on service projects in the community!
