Yesterday at MCBC we celebrated our graduates and heard a message about big changes. When we experience a big change or challenge in life - a graduation, a job change, a relationship ending, becoming empty nesters, etc. - it's easy to become overwhelmed. Challenges are loud. They can bring fear, pressure, and feelings of defeat.
To drown out that noise, it's important to remember that you're not alone: everyone experiences challenges. You have community to turn to, whether it be your family and friends, church family, or the people going through the change with you. And of course, God is with you. God loves to walk with those who struggle. Jesus was always near the sick, the uprooted, the scorned, and the marginalized. When people cried out to him for help, he healed them. When they professed their faith and praised God, he saved them.
God is with us. He listens, waiting for us to cry out to Him. If we lift our voices and call on Him, He will restore and redeem us.

We've been talking about using the spiritual disciplines of silence and solitude to drown out the ever constant noise of the world that distracts us from being in God's presence. Naturally, when we find ourselves alone with God we want to pray. But that usually means that we're talking. We're used to verbal prayer and to intercessory prayer, where we might list off the ways we're grateful, list off our concerns, make requests, and end in an "amen" - which is a very one-sided interaction. And if we try not to use our voices, turning to mental prayer, an endless stream of thoughts can consume our minds.
We need to zip it; to control our thoughts and our voices. We need to quiet ourselves in God's presence and listen to Him. None of our words or thoughts can compare to what God can pray in us. When we are awake in the presence of God we feel loved, strengthened, grounded, filled, and changed. We are able to comprehend the incomprehensible, and to know the unknowable - which is the love of Christ that surpasses all understanding.

The world is a noisy place, both literally - as in dogs barking, timers beeping, and traffic blaring - and figuratively. We are constantly engaged in conversation or receiving messaging from social media or being alerted to the latest news. And we're overwhelmed by it. We want to block the noise and shut out the world but here's the thing - the world's always been a noisy place, and it will always be a noisy place. How we react to the noise, how we let it take control of our mental and emotional wellbeing, is the problem.
We need to drown out the noise from time to time and retreat into solitude. Solitude is being alone, with God. Jesus practiced solitude a lot. He often withdrew from the crowds who came to see him because, well, people are noisy, and went to a quiet place. When ready, he returned to the people to teach, heal, and comfort. Sitting with God changes the way we hear people. It prepares us to approach noisiness with understanding and compassion. It also helps us deal with ourselves - to manage our own emotions and quiet the thoughts that reign loud inside of us. Sitting with God makes us aware of what we're feeling or thinking, and why, allowing healing to take place. Remember what Jesus did immediately upon hearing the news of John the Baptist's death? - he retreated in solitude and worked through his grief with God.
Solitude is so good for us. It prepares us for the noise that will eventually come. It's seeking God first. And to experience the presence of God - that's grace. And if we believe we can experience God - that He built a kingdom within us, that He made us a temple of His Spirit, and that He speaks to us in a gentle whisper within - that's faith. It is by faith through grace we are saved. Solitude is life saving stuff. So give it a try from time to time, and be like Jesus.
