Our motto is: "GOD FIRST”
Virtual Bible Study Wednesdays at 7 PM Our story begins in the humble shelters of poles and branches that dotted Chatham County in the 1800s, where our ancestors gathered beneath simple brush arbors to worship, pray, and call upon the name of the Lord. These early believers encountered God’s presence long before a formal church building stood on this land. Church history
traces our documented beginnings to the cornerstone date of 1853, when many believe the name Mt. Zion was first embraced. By 1910, the congregation was worshiping under a large tent, reflecting the same resilience and devotion that shaped our earliest founders. Not long afterward, the church moved to a building on Bolivar Street, faithfully pressing through fires and natural disasters. In 1913, the congregation settled on the land where Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church still stands today. For generations, this sacred ground has been a home for worship, fellowship, and community. A meaningful chapter in our recent history began on November 11, 2012, Pastor Larry M. Neal Sr, was installed as the seventh Senior Pastor of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Chapel Hill, NC. His steady leadership continues to guide us as we honor our heritage and step boldly into the future God has prepared.
“It comes down to love. Love your neighbor, your fellow human beings. Seek God first and He will always be there for you,” Pastor Neal often reminds his grateful congregation. Zion MBC celebrates over 170 years of worship, service, and spiritual growth. Our journey has been long, our heritage strong, and by God’s grace—we “ain’t” tired yet. Scripture teaches that we are the temple of God, yet there remains something powerful about gathering together in the Lord’s house. Psalm 122:1 expresses that joy: “I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord.”
If you’ve wondered what church is all about, the answer is simple: Jesus. At Mt. Zion MBC, we enter to deepen our relationship with Him through worship, and we exit to serve Him by serving others. When you visit, you’ll find relevant biblical teaching, encouragement for your journey, direction for your life, meaningful fellowship, and—most of all—love. We’re not perfect, but we strive each day to honor God in all we do. So come worship with us. Let us praise His holy name, grow closer to Him, and draw closer to one another. Our doors swing on welcome hinges—and there is a place here for you. 🕊️
