THE GIFT OF FORGIVENESS & REDEMPTION

I don't know anyone who enjoys failure. Everyone wants to succeed at something, but the reality of our fallibility means at some point we will come up short. In John 1:29, John the Baptist proclaimed of Christ, "...Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!"

This metaphorical language signified the sacrificial role Christ would play in bringing the world back to God and gave clarity as to the purpose of His sacrifice- He was to, “…take away the sin of the world"

The Greek word for sin, "hamartia" is also translated "failure". So, when John made his proclamation, he was revealing two presents in one gift: forgiveness from sin and redemption from failure.

We Christians are fairly practiced at requesting forgiveness for our disobedience, but not so skilled at requesting Divine "do overs" for our failures or believing for complete redemption.

Don't let your failures become your best reflection. Bring them to God and let Him "take them away", thereby creating a clean slate upon which He can draw the blueprints for your next victory. Live right, live well...

SET APART: A CALL TO CONSECRATION

As the people of Israel were preparing to cross the Jordan river and enter the Promised Land, Joshua tells them in Joshua 3:5, "...Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you."

Consecration is the intentional setting aside of something or someone for a specific purpose. In this case a people for God. It is interesting to note that promises were made generations ago that this land was to be theirs. God had destined them for this crossing. It was their inheritance, still they had to prepare themselves for the moment.

There are future intersections of blessings which God has foreordained. Yet, without the proper consecration, it is possible to experience movement without progress-- sort of like a man on a treadmill. Don't let your efforts be for not. Set yourself apart for God so you will be ready when it's your time to cross into your land of promises. Live right, live well...

SERVING BY NIGHT

Psalm 134:1-3 says, "Behold, bless the LORD, all servants of the LORD, who serve by night in the house of the LORD! 2 Lift up your hands to the sanctuary and bless the LORD. 3 May the LORD bless you from Zion, He who made heaven and earth."

Our walk with Jesus is not as illuminated as we would like. Often, we don't know what to do, where to go or how to process. In moments like this, the shortest Psalm in scripture is a great help.

The writer first states there is a blessing for all who serve God in darkness. In fact by using the "night shifts" of service in the temple as a metaphor, he intimates that not even "scheduled" dark moments should be feared.

His prescription for our poor "night vision" is to...
1. Bless the Lord (worship)
2. Lift up our hands (surrender)
3. Get to wherever "Zion" (the church) is and receive the blessing which God distributes through His people.

See, even in dark times God helps us to live right and live well...

HIGH CEILINGS

The Apostle Paul was vigilant about unveiling the equality God intended when He created male and female. Going cross-grain to the culture in which he was raised, he advocated for women’s ministry in the church.

In concert with other biblical texts, High Ceilings explores the writings of the lead apostle in the first church. While recognizing the historical interpretation of iconic passages that have traditionally defined a woman’s role in the church, High Ceilingsattempts to give a fresh perspective on the original intent of the writer; thereby increasing the distance between a woman and the roof.

DREAMING IN BLACK AND WHITE

The usual reflexive response of the injured is to hope for justice to be rained down on the offender. If the offended’s hope is realized, proper consequences are borne and penalties are meted out. Still, the question needs to asked, “Is there a more right, right?”
The usual reflexive response of the injured is to hope for justice to be rained down on the offender. If the offended’s hope is realized, proper consequences are borne and penalties are meted out. Still, the question needs to asked, “Is there a more right, right?”

Justice brings about the most appropriate consequences to the wrong doer; but it is a poor repairman. While it is often a needful step on the way to the wholeness that can be achieved, by itself it cannot fix what has been broken. When justice abides alone, the offended is still unresolved in their soul and the offended is now experiencing more pain. This is an altogether unsatisfactory conclusion to yesterday’s conflict.

Reconciliation is the best repair for relationships marred by offense and pain. It’s primary ingredients: mercy and forgiveness, dare essential to advancing hope in the offender and the offended.
It can create detent between hated rivals, make friends from enemies, and turn adversaries into advocates.

Black folks, let’s not allow justice to be lonely. Let us intentionally partner our painful relational past with reconciliation so that healing begins in America.

TAILOR-MADE
Having your ticket punched for glory is securing but properly appearing before Him when you get there is important also. Just as there is decorum when coming before the CEO of a major company or a head of state, there is a prescribed manner in which one must present themselves before God. Revelations 19:8 says when the church was to be brought before Christ, she was clothed, "...in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints."

Our obedience to God and service to man serve as the only fitting attire when coming before our King. When we walk as Ephesians 2:10 says- in the good works which have been prepared for us- like a tailor-made suit, God properly clothes us so that we may come before him without shame.

No one knows the day of his "home-going", so it might be wise to have a couple of, "fixin' to meet Jesus" suits in our closet. Today, please obey God and do somebody good. Live right, live well...

THE QUIETEST PRAYERS

Hannah was a woman in distress. 1 Samuel 1 says she was married to a man who had another wife and that the other wife had many children, yet Hannah was barren. Adding pain to misery, the rival would mock her childlessness as often as possible. The verbal jabs became so hurtful that at one family gathering, Hannah left the dinner celebration in tears and went to church. There, she prayed like she had never prayed before and it sounded something like this, "Lord, if you remember your maidservant by giving me a son, I'll give him back to You for all his days."

Well, even though according to scripture her prayer wasn't audible, God heard and granted her request. The greatest Judge since Joshua was born, and the world would never be the same.

If you find yourself unable to produce while all about you are reaping bumper crops, maybe God is bringing you to the same point at which He brought Hannah- the place of surrendering to Him that which He grants. When the heart abides in this location, God hears even the quietest prayer. Live right, live well...
