A nice reminder of how to work with a money bowl.

This resonated with me. A money bowl not to to be greedy or wealthy but to provide power in community for bail money, food for those who can’t safely leave their homes, for small food pantries, for training, for travel to protests, etc.

At the last UU Magick craft night, we wove with yarn and ribbons on branches cut and prestrung with warp threads. The ensuing variety of purpose and color choices were inspiring! I wove mine in grey to hide my kids and the house from regime cops and such. I wove both sides, forming a pocket for written prayers. If interested in these workshops, message Aaron Slayton or me and I will pass it on to him.

Brushed the offering stone to the Good Neighbors off. Laid out butter maple black tea, sleepy herbal, and strawberry black tea. The stone clear of snow today.

Folk Magic with Buttons
Ancestral Threading 🌿

Buttons in folk magic were often used both to close and to open.
A very old granny tradition speaks of using hand-me-down buttons, those saved in tins and jars through the years. These are believed to be the most potent, carrying memory and quiet lineage.

You will need:
• Old buttons (any size, any colour)
• Thread or cotton
• A small candle 🕯️

The candle is not for ritual, only to aid focus and to gently signal that you are honouring your ancestors as you craft.

Take a moment to look at your buttons.
Hold them. Feel their weight. Notice their shapes.
This is the important part, building connection through touch and memory. Here you are opening a doorway to ancestral presence with love and respect.

There is no right or wrong way.

Choose a button and thread the cotton through its holes.
Just one to begin. Any colour, any size, follow what you are drawn to.

As you thread, focus on what you would like to open or close in your life.
Perhaps opening the way to a new opportunity…
Closing a chapter that no longer serves…
Opening space for love…
Closing the door on old habits…
Or crafting it gently for someone you care for.

Always work with love. ❤️

Once threaded, tie a small knot while holding your intention clearly in mind.
Then simply repeat with more buttons until it feels complete. You will know when it is “done.”

When finished, hang your chain of buttons by a window or doorway, somewhere that connects inside and outside.
You may also tie it into a loop if you prefer.

I sometimes like to leave them on door handles, then when I open and shut the door, they rattle gently, and the magic ✨ is reawakened.

Where will you place yours?

And that is all.
A simple act of remembrance and intention, woven through everyday objects.

Celebrate with a cup of tea. ☕
And if you feel called, share a picture
I would love to see your creations.

Imbolc. So much good food! For twelve of us, we had; leg of lamb and mint jelly, homemade mac and cheese with broccoli, spaghetti squash with cheese, spinach, and bacon, goat cheese stuffed peppers in oil, sheep milk cheese, jarlesburg cheese, mango, cantelope, watermelon, pineapple, veggie tray, homegrown veggie salad, cheese ball and two types of crackers, salami, devilled eggs, homemade Irish soda bread with lightly sweetened whipped butter, warm blueberry cobbler, powder sugar-dusted apple cake, hard cider, NA beer. Table flowers grown by two of those gathered.

We held an Imbolc ritual in ADF druidry style asking Bridget to help us build a hearthfire big enough for our families, friends, and the immigrants among us. Omen was sobering. How were the offerings accepted? (Wildwood deck) Two of Stones-Challenge. Not the best sign. Gave a prayer offering to Bridget and an offering of salt that I was humble and had not overstepped leading the ritual. Drew a second card for how were our offerings accepted. Two of Bows-Decision. What has been given in return? The Seer. What do we need to do as a group? Five of Stones- Endurance. These are heavy omens. As if the first question asked was not what was answered. A time of challenges and hard decisions in regards to protecting and providing a hearthfire, a homefire, a place of safety and belonging to our family, friends, and the immigrants among us. Perhaps referring to the “two political sides.” The second question was what are our gifts in return? The card I drew was The Seer. Was this question ignored as well to tell us something important? Are we to have special insight into the challenges and choices we must make in this time of loss of rights? Loss of safety? Loss of democracy, itself? Or is this card standing in as the Goddess Brigid, herself? The third question was what does this group need to do now? The card was Five of Stones-Endurance. I was hoping for an uplifting answer. Something like “community”. I was given a harsher truth instead. We must endure. This omen shook me. It is truth.
