Chambersburg Quaker Meeting

We invite you to join us for worship on Sundays, 10:30-11:30 a.m. at our meetinghouse on Lindia Drive in Chambersburg. All are welcome!

Although there are a number of ways that Quakers worship, the hallmark of a meetinghouse is extreme simplicity and the absence of any liturgical symbols. Our weekly Meeting is based on sharing a powerful form of silent worship and a set of concerns for simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality, and stewardship. This leads us to translate our faith into action by working for social justice, supporting peacemakers, and caring for the environment.

The Quaker way has its roots in Christianity and finds inspiration in the Bible and the life and teachings of Jesus. Quakers also find meaning and value in the teachings of other faiths; we acknowledge that ours is not the only way.

Our History

From 1961-68 an informal gathering of Friends was held regularly through the school year. In 1968, the Franklin County Preparative Meeting, under the sponsorship of the Harrisburg Monthly Meeting, came into existence.

In the late summer of 1977, during an informal “State of the Meeting" discussion, Friends present mused, “How many Quakers does a Meeting make?”. Friends Meetings are rarely large in number, and we had a regular group of ten to twenty who had grown together in spirit and fellowship. Our thoughts were kindled to inquire about and to seek monthly meeting status. So we requested to be a monthly meeting in Caln Quarter of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. On May 14, 1978, memberships were officially transferred from Harrisburg to Chambersburg. Our official name was now Chambersburg Friends Meeting.

Over the years we had dreamed of a “real meetinghouse”, and several unsuccessful attempts had been made to locate a facility, but we continued to save money towards our goal. By 1993 the size of of our group and the space available were becoming problematic. We set up a Building Committee, compiled a "wish list" and started looking at properties. In late 1993 it was made known that the Jehovah's Witnesses property at 630 Lindia Drive was for sale. It's simplicity, attractive grounds, and versatile space met most of our needs. We were able to come to an agreement of sale, and on March 15, 1994, we took possession. Our first Meeting for Worship was March 20, 1994, and as Spring mirrored our new beginning, we were mindful of the faith and effort that had brought us to this point.
