Zion Reformed Church of the United Church of Christ, more commonly known as Zion Reformed Church or Zion UCC is a congregation of the United Church of Christ in the borough of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, United States. It belongs to the Mercersburg Association of the Penn Central Conference of the United Church of Christ. The congregation was organized in 1778 or 1779, but its first church buildin

g was not built until 1811-1813. This structure is still used for weekly worship, besides special services and other events, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is lit on Thanksgiving Eve and Christmas Eve every year.

🪦 TOMBSTONE TUESDAY: The Legacy of Zion Reformed 🪦

Take a walk down West Liberty Street and Black Avenue in Chambersburg, and you will find yourself standing next to over two centuries of local heritage at the historic Zion Reformed Church Cemetery.

The land was deeded in May 1780 by town founder Colonel Benjamin Chambers. Because of this gift, the Zion Reformed United Church of Christ participates in a unique tradition known as the "Rose Rent". Every June, the congregation pays an annual rent of exactly one red rose from the church grounds to a living descendant of the Chambers family—a ritual that has continued for generations.

If you explore the burial ground, you will find:

Early Pioneer Roots: Headstones belonging to foundational local families like Nitterhouse, Stouffer, and Lutz.

German Epitaphs: Weathered markers carved in the native German language of the church's late 18th-century founders.

Revolutionary War Patriots: Final resting places for veterans who fought in the birth of the nation, including Nicholas Snider, whose tavern hosted the very first gathering of the congregation in 1778.

The site stands today on the National Register of Historic Places, serving as a quiet, physical connection to Franklin County's earliest days.
