Requiescat in Pace

Mary Louise Gorodnick
January 8, 1937 - September 15, 2025

With heavy hearts, we remember and honor the life of someone whose presence brought warmth, joy, and inspiration to all she encountered. Though we mourn her passing on September 15, 2025, we celebrate the legacy she leaves behind—a legacy woven from kindness, wisdom, and countless cherished moments.

A Life of Purpose and Joy

Born on January 8, 1937, in Pensacola, Florida, Mary entered the world with a gentle spirit and an unwavering determination that would define her life. A devoted nurse for over 30 years—most of that time at Prince William Hospital—Mary lived a life of service, compassion, and love.

To know Mary was to know community. Mary and her husband Bill moved to Heritage Hunt in Gainesville Virginia in 2008, where she was, as many fondly called her, the unofficial mayor. Her involvement was tireless—golf, bocce, Heritage Hunt Women’s Organization, Gourmet Coterie, Bereavement Groups, and the Emergency Preparedness Committee, to name just a few. If there was a meeting, concert, trivia night, play, or happy hour, you could count on seeing Mary there—with a warm smile and her signature drink, "Mary’s Drink,” in hand.

Even when she could no longer play golf, she stayed involved by supporting the Junior Golf Program. When health challenges kept her off the bocce court, she still kept score—sometimes all day long. She showed up for others, always.

Mary loved games like Bunco and Mahjong and often hosted Mahjong gatherings in her home. She adored karaoke, theme parties, and holidays—especially dressing up to celebrate each one with flair and fun. Her zest for life was contagious.

She also never forgot a name. No matter where or how you met, Mary knew you—and she cared. Her joy came from people, and her love for life and her community—whether friends, patients, co-workers, or neighbors—she had an impact on everyone she met.

A Loving Family Woman

Mary was the beloved daughter of Howard and Martha Smith, a devoted wife to William Gorodnick, and a loving mother to three sons: Paul, Mark, and Barry. She was also a proud grandmother of five, Zachary, Rachael, Kaitlyn, Taylor & Ryan and great-grandmother of two, Landon & Karter. Aunt to Jeff & Lydia Kunion, David and Stacie Kunion.

She had a fierce love for her family, her friends, and for sports. A lifelong Minnesota Vikings fan, Fran Tarkenton was her all-time favorite player. She enjoyed watching college football, (Alabama) and golf on TV and followed local high school teams like the Robinson Rams football and softball teams. She also had a soft spot for The Game Show Network. Her favorite artists were Neil Diamond and Elvis Presley.

As a cancer survivor, Mary gave back. Every year, she participated in the walk to fight cancer—even when walking was no longer possible, she found ways to help. She could be found out on the sidelines in a golf cart, cheering others on and lending her nursing skills to those in need.

A Woman of Faith

Mary was a faithful member of the Church of the Ascension in Centreville for nearly 40 years. Over that time she served on the vestry, the altar guild, and served as historiographer, constantly taking pictures and putting together photo albums chronicling the life of the parish. She always enjoyed manning the cashiers post at Centreville Day, talking to all the people as they came to the bake sale at the parish hall and encouraging them to buy one more cookie, brownie, or raffle ticket. But at the center of it all was her faith in Christ her Savior and the knowledge that He had given His life so that we might have the opportunity for heaven.

A Lasting Impact

Mary’s life was a mosaic of generosity, resilience, humor, and unwavering community spirit. Her legacy continues through the many lives she touched, the laughter she shared, and the kindness she spread. Let us honor Mary by living as she did—showing up for others, finding joy in the everyday, and always making space for connection. Though she has departed, her spirit remains a guiding light.

May Mary’s memory be a blessing to all who mourn.

May we find peace in celebrating a life so beautifully lived. Forever remembered.
Forever loved.
