It is with both sadness and hope that the elders of Grace Community Church announce that Pastor John MacArthur has gone to be with the Lord after 56 years of faithful ministry. Last week, Pastor John unexpectedly contracted pneumonia, and the Lord took him home on Monday, July 14. Dr. MacArthur was 86 years old.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patricia; four children; fifteen grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Pastor MacArthur has consistently ministered to millions around the world from his pulpit, books, commentaries, conferences, and Grace-To-You ministry. His influence upon our precious church body Grace Fellowship Church is inestimable. For fourteen years, our church was established and grew underneath his video teaching. Like many of you, his impact upon our pastor and church leadership is tremendous.
What can we say? We recognize he is like us; a forgiven sinner who needs the pure grace of God through faith and repentance in the Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. Yet, we also with heartfelt gratitude, give thanks to our God for his influence upon our lives; we are more spiritually rich because of the ministry of Pastor MacArthur.
When the imprisoned Apostle Paul wrote Timothy his final letter, he states: “You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:14-15). As Paul’s race comes to an end, he exhorts Timothy to keep running with the Biblical truth he had learned from Paul and others because the cause of Christ is great. Likewise, the race for John MacArthur is over…and he finished well! Our race continues for Christ’s sake; may we also finish well!
