The three major harvest feasts of Israel were not random celebrations. They were prophetic pictures pointing to Jesus and what He would accomplish through His death, burial, resurrection, and the sending of the Holy Spirit. Under the Old Covenant, these feasts were observed yearly. After the cross, they reveal the finished work of Christ and our position in Him.
1. Passover (Barley Harvest) β Jesus Our Redemption
The first harvest feast was Passover. It celebrated Godβs deliverance of Israel from Egypt when the blood of a lamb protected them from judgment.
When Jesus came, He fulfilled Passover completely. He became the true Lamb of God. His blood was shed once and for all. Just as Israel was delivered from slavery through the blood of the lamb, believers have been delivered from sin, condemnation, and separation from God through the blood of Jesus.
After the cross, Passover reminds us that we do not earn Godβs acceptance. We have already been redeemed. Judgment has already passed over us because Jesus absorbed it at the cross.
The message of Passover for believers today is: You are redeemed.
2. Pentecost (Wheat Harvest) β Jesus Gives Us His Spirit
The second harvest feast was Shavuot, celebrated fifty days after Passover. It marked the wheat harvest and commemorated the giving of the Law at Mount Sinai.
What is incredible is that fifty days after Jesusβ resurrection, the Holy Spirit was poured out in Acts 2.
At Sinai, the Law was written on stone tablets.
At Pentecost, the Spirit was written on human hearts.
At Sinai, three thousand people died because of judgment.
At Pentecost, three thousand people were saved because of grace.
Jesus fulfilled what the Law could never accomplish. Instead of merely giving commands, He gives believers His Spirit.
After the cross, Pentecost reminds us that God is not distant. He lives within us. We are empowered, sealed, and equipped by the Holy Spirit.
The message of Pentecost for believers today is: You are empowered.
3. Tabernacles (Final Harvest) β Jesus Brings Us Home
The third major harvest feast was Sukkot. It celebrated the final ingathering harvest and commemorated Israel dwelling with God in temporary shelters during their wilderness journey.
This feast points to Godβs ultimate plan: dwelling with His people forever.
Jesus is called Immanuel, βGod with us.β Through His finished work, believers already enjoy fellowship with God. But Tabernacles also points forward to the day when Christ returns and Godβs people will dwell with Him forever.
The Bible ends with the declaration that Godβs dwelling place is with humanity. What began in a garden, continued in a tabernacle, and was fulfilled in Christ will ultimately be experienced in fullness when we see Him face to face.
After the cross, Tabernacles reminds us that we are not wandering toward acceptance. We already belong to God and are awaiting the fullness of what Jesus purchased.
The message of Tabernacles for believers today is: You are home.
So the three harvest feasts tell the entire Gospel story:
Passover: Jesus redeemed you.
Pentecost: Jesus filled you.
Tabernacles: Jesus will fully dwell with you forever.
Or put another way:
Redeemed. Empowered. Home.
Because of the finished work of Jesus, you are no longer a slave trying to earn freedom. You are a redeemed child of God, filled with the Holy Spirit, and destined to dwell with Him forever. The harvest feasts were shadows. Jesus is the reality.
