Isaiah 14:24. "The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand." The Lord of hosts, signifying His Omnipotence as Commander of the armies of heaven, was giving encouragement to the remnant of the children of Israel by swearing an oath that they would return to their land after captivity. All of this was in the future. He was foretelling the defeat of the Assyrian siege of Jerusalem under Hezekiah so that, as powerful as Babylon would be when Nebuchadnezzar finally did take their city, they would be assured that their exile would be only temporary. God swore an oath to Israel that they might know the certainty of His promise. In Hebrews 13:14-18, "When God made promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no greater, He swear by Himself....(that) we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:" The impossibility of the promise was defended by an oath from the Omnipotent God. The promises of God to us today may be for some future circumstances in our lives, a trial for which we do not yet need the promise. Some time before our son was diagnosed with cancer, which led to his heavenly homegoing a few months later, God gave me His Word, a promise I did not yet know I needed, but one that became my comfort and hope in dark days. What we read from God's Word today may seem inapplicable in our current situation, but be assured it is never for nothing. God always goes before. Trust Him.
