A reminder, for when the world is unkind, this is how Jesus taught us to treat others:
1. Love everyone. Even our enemies. Matthew 22:37-39 tell us about loving our neighbors and through the sermon on the mount in Matthew 5 Jesus instructs us to love even our enemies.
2. Have compassion. Luke 7:12-15 tell us how Jesus was moved by compassion and raised a widow’s son to life, and in Mark 1:40 Jesus touches and heals a l***r, ensuring that there was no person left unnoticed or cared about by Jesus. Even when society did not notice them or had cast them out.
3. Treat all people with dignity. Dignity is the worth someone has simply by being human. The story of the good Samaritan in Luke 10 shows us that kindness is due the stranger and the person that may not be otherwise shown compassion.
4. Fight against injustice. True peace comes from disrupting evil, and Matthew tells us whatever we do for the least of these, we do for God. Mark 11 shares the warning to watch for systems that harm people when Jesus says, “But you have made the house of God a ‘den of robbers.’ And the story of the Samaritan Woman in John 4 is an example of Jesus engaging in the fight to break down racism.
5. Care for the poor and marginalized. Luke 4:18 shares about being anointed to proclaim good news to the poor and Matthew 25 reminds us that that good news must come with practical care, like clothing and food, and what we offer others is directly related to what we’re offering or not offering God himself.
