Dear Friends,
In this world we will face evil and trouble, but he has overcome the world. Let us trust and hope in him.
Below are the songs, scriptures, and liturgy for our service this morning.
Prelude: Your Love Oh Lord, by Third Day
Taken from Psalm 36
Your love, oh Lord
Reaches to the heavens
Your faithfulness stretches to the sky
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains
Your justice flows like the ocean's tide
I will lift my voice
To worship You, my King
I will find my strength
In the shadow of your wings
Your love, oh Lord
Reaches to the heavens
Your faithfulness stretches to the sky
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains
Your justice flows like the ocean's tide
I will lift my voice
To worship You, my King
I will find my strength
In the shadow of your wings
I will find my strength
In the shadow of your wings
I will lift my voice
To worship You, my King
I will find my strength
In the shadow of your wings
I will lift my voice
I will lift my voice
To worship You, my King
I will find my strength
I will find my strength
In the shadow of your wings
Your love, oh Lord
Reaches to the heavens
Your faithfulness stretches to the sky
Welcome and Call to Worship
Psalm 36:5-10
Psalm 36:5 Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. 6 Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep. O LORD, you preserve both man and beast. 7 How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings. 8 They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights. 9 For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light. 10 Continue your love to those who know you, your righteousness to the upright in heart.
Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise
Hymn #12
Text: Walter Smith, Music: Welsh melody
public domain
1 Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessed, most glorious,
the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious,
thy great name we praise.
2 Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might:
thy justice, like mountains high soaring above;
thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.
3 To all, life thou givest,
to both great and small.
In all life thou livest, the true life of all.
We blossom and flourish
like leaves on the tree,
then wither and perish;
but naught changeth thee.
4 Thou reignest in glory; thou dwellest in light.
Thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight.
All praise we would render; O help us to see
'tis only the splendor of light hideth thee! *
Confession
Oh God our Father, we confess that at times when we see evil and evil ones rise up, we fret and worry and lash out. We forget to wait and to trust you. Forgive us. Enable us to trust you and do good. Enable us to be still and to see and believe in the future that you will soon bring about. Come, Lord Jesus. Amen.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your way,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.
Assurance of Pardon
Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning,
is now and ever shall be.
World without end. Amen. Amen.
Psalm 37:14-29
Psalm 37:14 The wicked draw the sword and bend the bow to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose ways are upright. 15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts, and their bows will be broken. 16 Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked; 17 for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous. 18 The days of the blameless are known to the LORD, and their inheritance will endure forever. 19 In times of disaster they will not wither; in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.
20 But the wicked will perish: The LORD's enemies will be like the beauty of the fields, they will vanish-- vanish like smoke. 21 The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously; 22 those the LORD blesses will inherit the land, but those he curses will be cut off. 23 If the LORD delights in a man's way, he makes his steps firm; 24 though he stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.
25 I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. 26 They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be blessed. 27 Turn from evil and do good; then you will dwell in the land forever. 28 For the LORD loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. They will be protected forever, but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off; 29 the righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever.
Romans 5:1-8
Romans 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope.
5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. 6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say
Hymn #182
Text: Horatius Bonar, Tune: English folk tune, public domain. New recording by Brian Doerksen, 2021 Hymns for Life Album
From the hymn book notes:
Each stanza here pairs an invitation from Jesus with a response from the narrator. These invitations recall how Jesus welcomed those who were heavy laden (Matthew 11:28), offered living water (John 4:10-14), and identified himself as the light of the world (John 8:12, 9:5)

1 I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Come unto me and rest;
lay down, O weary one, lay down
your head upon my breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was,
so weary, worn, and sad;
I found in him a resting place,
and he has made me glad.
2 I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Behold, I freely give
the living water, thirsty one;
stoop down and drink and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank
of that life-giving stream;
my thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
and now I live in him.

3 I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“I am this dark world’s light;
look unto me, your morn shall rise,
and all your day be bright.”
I looked to Jesus, and I found
in him my star, my sun;
and in that light of life I’ll walk
till traveling days are done. *

Children’s Message
Psalm 37:1 Of David. Do not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong; 2 for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.
Matthew 9:35-10:8
Matthew 9:35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."
10:1 He called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: "Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. 7 As you go, preach this message: 'The kingdom of heaven is near.' 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.

Psalms 36-37
“Do Not Fret”
Psalm 36: An oracle concerning “the sinfulness of the wicked”
Psalm 36:4 Even on his bed he plots evil; he commits himself to a sinful course and does not reject what is wrong.
5 Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. 6 Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep…
Not only is God, the LORD, vast in all the right ways, but also generously hospitable.
“your preserve both man and beast”
“both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings.”
“They feast on the abundance of your house;
you give them drink from your rivers of delight.”
“With you is the fountain of life…”
“Continue your love to those who know you, your righteousness to the upright in heart.
May the foot of the proud not come against me, nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.”
“See how the evildoers lie fallen – thrown down, not able to rise.”
Small, withering, fading away…
contrast with vast, strong, generous.
But what about in the moments when evil does not seem small, when it has not yet faded away, when it, for the moment, seems flourishing and successful?
We turn for that question to Psalm 37.
“Do not fret…”
Trust in the LORD,
- do good.
First word – Do not fret.
Last word – salvation, refuge – in that big, vast, and hospitable God of Psalm 36, even if you experience a little bit trouble along the way.

Psalm 37:3 Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. 4 Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Gimmel.
Here is another way to say trust in the LORD, and what it leads to.
Psalm 37:5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: 6 He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.
Dalet.
Psalm 37:7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. 8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret-- it leads only to evil.
Anger is not going to help in this particular scenario. Let it go. Turn it over to the – ‘he will take care of it at the appropriate time’ department.
He. (pronounced Hey)
Psalm 37:8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret-- it leads only to evil. 9 For evil men will be cut off, but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land.

Psalm 37:8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret-- it leads only to evil. 9 For evil men will be cut off, but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land.
Vav.
“Inherit the land” strikes again. This is a theme picked up by Jesus in the sermon on the mount.
Psalm 37:10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. 11 But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy great peace.
Meek does not mean weak. But rather – great power/strength under control.
Like a horse and bridle.

Echoes of Psalm 2
Psalm 37:12 The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them; 13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming.
Psalm 37:39 The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble. 40 The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.
For application this week:
- Pick one, that is a set of 2 verses. Talk about it or meditate on it.
- Write down one thing that makes you fret. Say a prayer of turning it over. Ask for the LORD’s grace and salvation. And his peace.
Apostles Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
A Mighty Fortress is Our God
Hymn #275
verses 1,2,4
by Martin Luther, public domain, 1529.
1 A mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing.
Our helper he, amid the flood
of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
doth seek to work us woe.
His craft and power are great,
and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.
2 Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing,
were not the right man on our side,
the man of God's own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he.
Lord Sabaoth his name,
from age to age the same,
and he must win the battle.
3 And though this world, with devils filled,
should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God hath willed
his truth to triumph through us.
The Prince of Darkness grim,
we tremble not for him.
His rage we can endure,
for lo, his doom is sure.
One little word shall fell him.
4 That word above all earthly powers,
no thanks to them, abideth.
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
through him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go,
this mortal life also.
The body they may kill;
God's truth abideth still.
His kingdom is forever. *
