“Do Not Fret”

Psalm 36: An oracle concerning “the sinfulness of the wicked”

Psalm 36:4 Even on his bed he plots evil; he commits himself to a sinful course and does not reject what is wrong.

5 Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. 6 Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the great deep…

Not only is God, the LORD, vast in all the right ways, but also generously hospitable.

“your preserve both man and beast”
“both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings.”

“They feast on the abundance of your house;
you give them drink from your rivers of delight.”
“With you is the fountain of life…”

“Continue your love to those who know you, your righteousness to the upright in heart.

May the foot of the proud not come against me, nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.”

“See how the evildoers lie fallen – thrown down, not able to rise.”

Small, withering, fading away…
contrast with vast, strong, generous.

But what about in the moments when evil does not seem small, when it has not yet faded away, when it, for the moment, seems flourishing and successful?

We turn for that question to Psalm 37.

“Do not fret…”

Trust in the LORD,

- do good.

First word – Do not fret.
Last word – salvation, refuge – in that big, vast, and hospitable God of Psalm 36, even if you experience a little bit trouble along the way.

Anger is not going to help in this particular scenario. Let it go. Turn it over to the – ‘he will take care of it at the appropriate time’ department.

“Inherit the land” strikes again. This is a theme picked up by Jesus in the sermon on the mount.

Psalm 37:10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. 11 But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy great peace.

Meek does not mean weak. But rather – great power/strength under control.
Like a horse and bridle.

For application this week:
- Pick one, that is a set of 2 verses. Talk about it or meditate on it.

- Write down one thing that makes you fret. Say a prayer of turning it over. Ask for the LORD’s grace and salvation. And his peace.

Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26

"Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him. 10 While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" 12 On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13 But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' Bold Prayers

“This ‘day of trouble’ is one of impending battle, as the chariots of verse 7 make clear. The shape of the psalm brings the scene before us as the king prepares to march; his prayers and sacrifices offered, his plans prepared and his men grouped with their standards. First there is the congregation’s God speed to him (1-5), a corporate invocation of blessing. In reply, a single voice, perhaps of the king himself, tells of the certainty of God’s answer (‘Now I know…’, 6-8). Then the people respond with a final prayer for him (9), brief and urgent.” (Kidner, 118)

In the prayer, God comes from where he is to where we are. His power comes into life where lived.

This is an indication of the dedication of this particular crisis to God and also an indication of a life of faithfulness over time. Special offerings and regular offerings. Special time and ordinary time.

James 5:16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

Other examples of the prayers of faithful people – Jairus, Cornelius, Moses, Elijah…

James 4:3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. 4 You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

Psalm 20:4 May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.

- Make a list of things that are “on your heart”, that you think and dream about. What would happen if these things all came true? Would that be good or bad?
- Pray any one of the lines of Psalm 20 for someone in the room. Let’s practice praying with and for each other – for the glory of God.
