The work of caring for those in need is big, broad, and global and can feel overwhelming. We tackle it one mother, one child, one family, one kind act at a time.

Seeing it through that lens keeps me optimistic. The challenges are big; the opportunities are even bigger.

In February 2023, I had the life-changing opportunity to travel to a remote part of Uganda, the Karamoja region.

I participated in a health fair of sorts, under a tree. There were medical checks for expectant mothers; tests for malaria, anemia, and AIDS; and screenings of children for malnutrition.

The women were taught about the nutritious foods they could prepare with the resources available. And I had the opportunity to kneel there with them and feed the children.

The information that was shared at the health fair was then taught and retaught by village health teachers. Blessed by information, the health teachers traveled on foot to the mud huts of other women to share what they had learned.

Never underestimate the power of one woman sharing her knowledge and performing an act of kindness. That’s ministering as the Savior did—one by one.

As we follow His example, our daily acts of kindness bless others and change us. Those small and simple acts help us become more like Jesus Christ.

Faith in Every Footstep" was composed by K. Newell Dayley in 1996 as the official theme song for the 1997 Pioneer Sesquicentennial—commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Latter-day Saint pioneers entering the Salt Lake Valley.

The inspiration for the hymn came through a blend of personal reflection, missionary preparation, and scripture study.

In late 1995, Brother Dayley was preparing his son to serve a full-time mission in England. For several weeks, the two spent time studying and memorizing scriptures together every morning. Lines from scriptures like Doctrine & Covenants 4 ("O ye that embark in the service of God, give heart, mind and strength unto Him...") became deeply ingrained in his mind during this process.

One morning, while reflecting on his own family history, Dayley realized that some of his pioneer ancestors had actually joined the Church in England—the very same place his son was about to serve.

Connecting his ancestors' faith in England with his son's upcoming mission sparked an overwhelming feeling of gratitude. Dayley recalled that the scripture verses he had been memorizing merged with those feelings, driving him to write the hymn's text. He originally drafted nine verses before condensing them down and adding the chorus.

The main body of the hymn came together very quickly that morning, built out of what Dayley called the "missionary spirit".

Within weeks, text and music were finalized. The song was published in the Ensign magazine in January 1997, sung during sesquicentennial celebrations worldwide, and eventually translated into dozens of languages—later officially being added to the Church's Hymns—For Home and Church collection.
