BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS: 7 THINGS PARENTS CAN DO

DAY 4: HELP THEM RESPECT THEIR TEACHERS

Your child will take many of their cues from the way you speak about their teachers.

There may be times this year when you disagree with a decision, question how something was handled, or need to address a real concern. That is okay. Parents should advocate for their children when necessary.

But those conversations should be handled respectfully and directly. When children regularly hear adults criticize or belittle their teachers, it becomes much harder for them to listen, learn, and show respect in the classroom.

Before school starts, remind your child that teachers are people too. They will not always be perfect, but they deserve kindness, cooperation, and respect.

Teach your child that disagreement does not give us permission to be disrespectful.

BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS: 7 THINGS PARENTS CAN DO

DAY 3: ASK WHAT THEY ARE WORRIED ABOUT

A child can be excited about going back to school and still be carrying some real worries.

Maybe they are nervous about a new teacher, harder schoolwork, finding their classroom, making friends, fitting in, riding the bus, or simply not knowing what the year will bring.

Take a few minutes today and ask:

“Is there anything about school that you are nervous about?”

Then listen without laughing, dismissing the concern, or immediately trying to fix it. What seems small to an adult may feel very big to a child.

Reassure them that they can always come to you, and remind them that they can bring their fears to God too.

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” — Psalm 56:3

BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS: 7 THINGS PARENTS CAN DO

DAY 2: DEFINE WHAT A GOOD YEAR LOOKS LIKE

Before school starts, talk with your child about what a successful school year should look like.

Of course, we want them to learn and do their best academically. But a good year is about more than grades. Talk about being respectful, telling the truth, working hard, taking responsibility, treating others kindly, and asking for help when they need it.

Make your expectations clear, but also make sure your child knows that one bad grade, one mistake, or one difficult day will never change how much they are loved.

A good school year is not a perfect year. It is a year of effort, growth, and faithful choices.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” — Colossians 3:23

BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS: 7 THINGS PARENTS CAN DO

One week from today, our children will begin a brand-new school year.

Over the next seven days, we will share one simple thing parents can do to help their children start the year well. These are not complicated ideas, and none of us will do them perfectly. They are simply practical reminders to help us prepare our children—not only with supplies, clothes, and schedules, but emotionally, spiritually, and at home.

DAY 1: RESET THE FAMILY ROUTINE

Summer routines are fun, but school mornings usually go better when the adjustment does not happen all at once.

Begin moving bedtime and wake-up time closer to the school schedule. Start laying out clothes, packing bags, and preparing for the morning the night before.

A peaceful school morning usually begins with preparation the evening before.

“The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance.” — Proverbs 21:5
