First Friday Devotion

One of the promises of Our Lord to Srt. Margaret Mary for the Soul Devoted to His Sacred Heart is:

3) "I will comfort them in their afflictions."

May God help us to be in his presences always and be comforted in times of distress and of joy

"May the heart of Jesus, in the Most Blessed Sacrament, be praised, adored, and loved, with grateful affection, at every moment, in all the tabernacles of the world, even to the end of time. Amen."

Memorial of the Passion of St. John the Baptist

By dying for the truth, he prepared the way for the Lord's Passion. John the Baptist was, through and through, a "righteous and holy man," and the Gospel today reveals that Herod, even while being rebuked, "liked to listen to him." This can only be accounted for by the Baptist's great love. All of us find in John the Baptist an inspiration to live with courageous love. "Life," as Pope Francis once preached on this day, "has value only in giving it, in giving it in love, in truth, in giving it to others, in daily life, in the family."

St. Augustine of Hippo, Doctor of Grace

Born in Tagaste, North Africa, in 354, Augustine entered the Church at the age of thirty-two. After his baptism by Saint Ambrose in 387, he was ordained and then in 395 elected Bishop of Hippo. His over 1,700 writings include sermons, treatises, scriptural commentaries, the spiritual classic Confessions, and the magisterial City of God. His biographer Possidius wondered how anyone could have produced such a volume of work. At the end of his life, Augustine requested that the seven penitential psalms, copied in large print, be hung in his room. He recited them for the ten days leading up to his death on August 28, 430.

Fun Fact, It is through the prayer of his mother, St. Monica, that led to his conversion. What a great perseverance!

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today's Gospel, we heard that Jesus asked his disciples, "Who do you say that I am?" This is after all the things, miracles, and words he had been showing to them. He received answers like Elijah, John the Baptist, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. But one answer is right: it was Simon's. He said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Then Jesus entrusted him the Church as the rock to whom his church will be built, also the keys to the kingdom of heaven.

A faith that is given to him not by man but by God. This week let us pray that we may have a strong faith like Peter.

Today in Faith...
St. Joseph Calasanz

Joseph was born in Aragon, Spain, of noble parents.
He received an education in theology and law and was eventually ordained a diocesan priest. In 1592 he went to Rome, where he cared for plague victims alongside Saint Camillus de Lellis. In 1597 he opened the first free public school in Rome. In homeless and abandoned children, he saw another Christ: "Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me" (Mt 25:40). Other men joined Joseph in his care for children, which led to the beginning of the Piarist order. He died in 1648 and is the patron of Catholic schools.

Today in Faith...
St. Bartholomew, Apostle

Bartholomew, one of the Twelve, is traditionally identified with Nathanael of today's Gospel. To Nathanael, Philip issues the invitation: "Come and see." Coming to Jesus, Nathanael not only sees but "is seen." Jesus tells him, "Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree." This revelation moves Nathanael to confess: "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel." The feast of Saint Bartholomew moves us to believe in the Lord's loving attention to us at all times, even when it is not sensibly felt, and to look forward to the day when we will see him in glory.

May he help us to keep our eyes on Jesus.

St. Rose of Lima

Isabel was born in 1586 in Lima, Peru. A nurse remarked that she was "beautiful like a rose," and the name stuck. From a very young age, Rose felt chosen by God. She resorted to disfiguring her face by rubbing it with pepper to ward off would-be suitors.
At twenty, she took the habit of the Dominican Third Order and chose for her hermitage a tiny hut in the family garden. She cared tenderly for the poor in a room of her parents' house. She was frequently criticized by her neighbors but also frequently consoled by profound experiences of Christ's presence. She died in 1617.

Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

"The Holy Virgin is, by her motherhood, queen of the whole universe. For, if she is a mother, she is naturally heiress of the entire patrimony of the Son" (Father Edouard Hugon, O.P.). Today's feast reminds us that we can turn to Mary in every need, counting on her intercession and mediation. Saint Maximilian Kolbe wrote that Mary
"has a right to be loved as Queen of all hearts so that through her, hearts would be cleansed and themselves become immaculate, similar and like unto her own heart, and so worthy of union with God." The Queenship of Mary invites us to love Christ by loving and serving his Mother.

Holy Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth, Pray for us.
