Hesychasm is the Eastern Orthodox system of spiritual practices. Having its roots in Scripture and monastic tradition, it comprises an interconnected series of practices and virtues that produce a total transformation of human subjectivity. Notable among these practices and virtues are the repetitive use of the Jesus Prayer ("Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner"), the control

of the breath to facilitate concentration and the development of silent contemplation, the incorporation of bodily postures in prayer, and the possibility of the perception of the Light of Mount Tabor, the Transfiguration light. These and many other practices and virtues form an integrated system, and it is in this insistence on the systematic nature of Hesychasm that the uniqueness of the Hesycheia Center teaching consists.
