Cedar Rapids Theology on Tap

Cedar Rapids Theology on Tap A monthly opportunity for young adults to dive into their faith and grow in community!

06/07/2026

The liturgy is the lifeblood of our Catholic faith - where Heaven meets Earth and Jesus Christ is truly present among us. Yet it's easy to move through our prayers without reflecting on the incredible gift we share through it.

Join us for a parish presentation at St. John XXIII, "Living the Liturgy". Drawing upon his knowledge and experience as former Director of the Office of Worship, Fr. Greg will explore the beauty, meaning, and power of communal prayer. Rediscover how liturgy can transform your heart and our community! Whether you are lifelong in the faith or just beginning, this presentation will deepen your love for how we celebrate the Sacred Mysteries.

The Sunday and Monday evening presentations will be stand alone presentations (come to either or both!), with a light reception to follow.

See you JUNE 18 for our next Theology on Tap!
💬: Death by Joy: Our Participation in the Work of Christ
📣: Connor Miller
📅: Thursday, June 18, 2026
⏰: 6:00pm; talk starts at 7:00pm
📍: Parlor City Pub and Eatery

St. John Vianney (beloved patron of the Archdiocese of Dubuque) once quipped, “If we truly understood the Mass, we would die of joy.”
While we will never fully understand this prayer of the Church on this side of the veil, it is of great importance that we continue to learn why we do what we do when we participate in it.

In his talk, Connor will aim to:
➡️explain what liturgy is
➡️explore what liturgy encompasses
➡️expound what it means for us to participate in it

We will dive into the Church’s teachings and learn how our participation in it can extend beyond church walls and into everyday life so as to “pray without ceasing.”

Connor Miller is the Director of Music and Liturgy at St. Patrick Catholic Church. He loves the Lord, loves the liturgy, and loves making music. In addition to parish work, Connor serves on the CR Theology on Tap board, maintains an active graphic design practice, and serves as the Master of Ceremonies for Archdiocesan Liturgies. In his (sparing) free time, he enjoys reading, hanging out with friends, and can probably be found listening to the latest music from Cody Fry or watching an episode of Taskmaster.

💬: Now That We Have Eaten: GO FORTH!
📣: Fr. Ken Glaser

The Eucharist we share is the "source and summit" of our faith, but it is also the foundation that we build our lives upon. I will be using the story of the early disciples on the Road to Emmaus for insights. In my reflections we will discover that the Eucharist is more than a weekend gathering at Mass for an hour, it is an invitation into something much deeper ~ our personal lives. Each time we walk with others, when we question our faith, when we encounter strangers and gather around our dining room table, we become Eucharistic people. It is my hope our time together will be a dialogue of how we encounter and discover our Lord in the Breaking of the Bread!

Fr. Ken Glaser is the pastor of St. Ludmila parish in Cedar Rapids, IA

💬: The Humanity of Christ: The Source of Our Sanctification
📣: Deacon Joshua Krischel
📅: Thursday, April 16, 2026
⏰: 6:00pm
📍: Parlor City Pub and Eatery

We as Catholics believe that Jesus is, both, fully divine and fully man. The first several hundred years of the Church's theological debate centered around this very issue, the Church dogmatically declaring Christ's hypostatic union at the Council of Chalcedon in 451. Why is this such a crucial dogma in our faith? Perhaps even more importantly, what implications does it have for us here and now as disciples of Christ? Thankfully, the wisdom of the Church and the Saints has some answers for us!

Deacon Joshua Krischel is a transitional deacon for the Archdiocese of Dubuque who will be ordained to the priesthood of Jesus Christ this May with his three classmates. He entered seminary after completing his degree in Agronomy at Iowa State University and finished studies this past December. He currently serves at Immaculate Conception and St. Wenceslaus parishes here in Cedar Rapids.

💬: One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic: The Church as the Mystical Body of Christ
📣: Brady North, part of our Peer Perspectives series
📅: Thursday, March 19, 2026
⏰: 6:00pm
📍: Parlor City Pub and Eatery

Every Sunday in the Creed we profess that the Church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic. These words can easily pass by us, but they are actually profound claims about the nature of the Church Christ founded.

These four marks help us understand not only what the Church is, but also who Christ is and how he continues his work in the world. By exploring these marks together, we’ll see how they ultimately point us to one of the Church’s deepest mysteries: that she is the Mystical Body of Christ.

Brady North is a parishioner of St. Wenceslaus in Cedar Rapids and a Systems Engineer at Collins Aerospace. He is currently a graduate student in theology and is a lay member of the Third Order of St. Dominic (the Order of Preachers). Brady sings in the parish choirs, trains at St. Michael’s Barbell Club, and is the proud uncle of six nephews and nieces.

See you THURSDAY for our next Theology on Tap!
💬: Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving: Storytelling of How St. Francis Xavier Lived These
📣: Michele Gelaude
📅: Thursday, February 19, 2026
⏰: 6:00pm
📍: Parlor City Pub and Eatery

Our Catholic schools are named Xavier, but many know little about the powerhouse, St. Paul-like-apostle and missionary St. Francis Xavier was throughout India and Japan. Join Theology on Tap for insights into his conversion towards prioritizing Christ above the rest, his approaches of service and alms, prayer, and fasting in his entrance into each new mission territory. And, how each of these both amplified his love for the people in his midst and reliance on Christ.

Michele Gelaude is a faculty member in the Department of Theology at Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids, IA. She aims to bring the Catholic theology, belief, and faith alive for young people, inviting them to live in close relationship with Christ, and transform our culture to be more sacramental, prayerful, vocationally driven. Her previous high school, Roncalli High School in Indianapolis, IN, knew their saint namesake (St. John XXIII) very well. This prompted Michele to do a deep-dive study into primary sources of St. Francis Xavier's life to aid in Xavier High School, and the now-system, to be aware of ways his discipleship points all to a deeper, unafraid discipleship of Jesus Christ in their here and now. Michele received a BA from Loras College, and her MA in Theology from the University of Notre Dame through the Echo program. In addition to teaching high school theology, for the past seven years, Michele has served as a ND STEP facilitator and as the Program Coordinator of ND Vision CYM and soon-to-be ND Vision Leadership week for high schoolers. Michele also serves on the Board of Directors for Biking for Babies. Michele enjoys RAGBRAI, hiking in the Rockies, time with family and friends playing games, Adoration, service in CR, and nutritional cooking (recipes, welcome!)
