Salem United Methodist Church

Salem United Methodist Church • Salem United Methodist Church • Serving Christ and the SW Cedar Rapids Community • “Salem” originated from the Hebrew word, shalom.

This is usually translated as peace. God’s peace, however, is not just the absence of conflict but the wholeness of life. Shalom means completeness, wholeness, health, peace, joy, love, friendship, well-being, justice, and salvation. Salem/Shalom is God’s will for the world, for the renewal of creation. Therefore, as followers of Jesus Christ we hope to embody God’s Salem for the world. Worship on

Sundays
9 AM (Modern worship), 11 AM (Traditional worship). Both are live streamed on Facebook, YouTube, and salemchurch.life.

Today is the opening day of the Iowa Annual Conference meeting for 2026. It is filled with powerful preaching, approving pastors for ordination, and the beginnings of legislation. Bishop Kennetha is helping to bring excitement to our denominational vision statement:
Love Boldly
Serve Joyfully
Lead Courageously

Rev. David Higdon was also recoginzed with 60 years of service in ordained ministry.

Welcome to day 1 of the 2026 Annual Conference at the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex. Join us for Call to Order, Open Worship, and the Episcopal Address with Bishop Kennetha Bigham-Tsai.

Livestreaming will begin at 1:00pm right here 👉 vimeo.com/event/5916636

Forgiveness can change relationships, heal hearts, and bring freedom—but sometimes the hardest person to forgive is ourselves.

This Sunday, we conclude our Forgiveness series at Salem UMC by exploring what it means to extend grace to others and to ourselves. God’s grace was never meant to stop with us. It was meant to flow through us.

Join us June 7 at 9 or 11 AM as we learn how forgiveness opens the door to healing and new beginnings.

This June, you’ll notice me wearing my rainbow stole in worship in honor of Pride Month.

I do so because Pride Month is still necessary. LGBTQ+ people continue to experience rejection, discrimination, bullying, and exclusion. Sometimes this is from the very communities that should be sources of love and support. Pride Month is an opportunity to affirm the sacred worth and dignity of every person and to recommit ourselves to creating communities where all people are welcomed and loved.

As Christians, we believe every person is created in the image of God. My rainbow stole is a visible reminder of that conviction and of my commitment to sharing Christ’s love with all.

May we continue growing as a people marked by God's wildly inclusive grace.

Because of Jesus,
Rev. Matt German
