This is a photo of my father about 1920. I have posted it before.
Yesterday was my fathers’s birthday. Leland Freeman Brown. Born January 14 1900 in Cedar County and was raised in Cedar Rapids. He worked at the Oak Hill Cemetery as a grave digger while going to the University of Iowa. He graduated in 1923 with an Engineering degree and eventually moved to New York City where he met and married my mother Florence Hennig. He passed May 26 1995 in New York.

ACCORDING TO THE FIND A GRAVE WEBSITE THERE ARE AT LEAST 72 INTERMENTS WITH THE SURNAME BROWN IN THE OAK HILL CEMETERY.

THIS STORY IS ABOUT WILLIAM BROWN SR.
A Virginian, soldier, slave holder and father to eight including a Civil War Union soldier.

Pvt William Brown was born in 1793 in Virginia.
He served in THE WAR OF 1812.
About 1819, William married Elizabeth Hamilton Britton in Virginia.

In the 1840 Federal Census, Augusta, Virginia, for William Sr there are 12 free white persons listed. These 12 probably consisted of William, his wife Elizabeth, his children and 2 older persons. These older individuals probably were the parents of either Elizabeth or William. William owned several slaves.

In the 1850 Federal Census for Augusta, Virginia, William and Elizabeth and eight children are listed. These children are Elizabeth age 25, Cornelia 19, William 17, Thomas 15, Clorinda 12, Francis 9, Emeline 6 and Theda 3. Another daughter Sarah born in 1830 already was married and was not living with her parents.
In 1850 William owned a plantation and owned at least twelve slaves. He valued his assets as about $7,000.

Sometime during the mid 1850s, the Brown family moved to Iowa.
William must have sold his plantation and slaves.
In the 1860 Federal Census, the Brown family is living in Clear Creek, Johnson County, Iowa. William is a farmer and owns $3,500 in real estate and $350 in personal assets. The family consists of William and Elizabeth, and children James, Clorinda, Francis, Emeline and Theda.

William died 11 Feb1868 in Cedar Rapids.
He is buried in THE OAK HILL CEMETERY.

In the 1870 Federal Census, wife Elizabeth is living in Hardin, Greene County, with her children Francis and Emeline, and with her grandchildren Mollie and Theda (children of daughter Sarah).

In the 1880 Federal Census Elizabeth is living with children Francis and Cornelia.
Elizabeth died 29 April 1889.
She is buried in THE OAK HILL CEMETERY.

Sarah born about 1821 died in 1910, married Bernard Shuey. Both are buried in THE OAK HILL CEMETERY.
Elizabeth born about 1820 never married, died 1910 and is buried in The Oakland Cemetery in Johnson County,
Cornelia, born about 1831, died 1913, married Joseph Custer, and is buried in The Rogers Grove Cemetery in Linn County.
Pvt William born about 1833, married Mary Hardy, divorced, died 1925 and he is buried in The Jefferson Cemetery, Greene County.
James (Thomas) born about 1835, married Clorinda, died and is buried in Jefferson Cemetery.
Emeline (Emma) born 1843, never married, died 1925 and is buried in THE OAK HILL CEMETERY.
Francis (Frank) born about 1840, married Viola Crister, died 1924, and is buried in The Jefferson Cemetery, Greene County.
Information concerning Theda born about 1847 cannot be found.

THE PHILO HALL FAMILY

Philo Hall was born 26 March 1833 in St. Lawrence County, New York.
He was the son of Eliphalet and Hannah Hall.
He moved to Iowa sometime about 1856.
In 1860 he was living in Clinton County,Iowa.
He became active in the politics of the county and state.
During the Civil War he acted as provost general for counties in the Clinton County area.
In 1864 he moved to New York City, and became active with a bank and brokerage firm.
He married Lucretia Brownell August 6, 1865.
He returned to Iowa in 1869.
In 1871 Philo became involved with various companies and participated in the growth of the railroad business.

In the 1870 Federal Census, Philo and Lucretia and two daughters, Bertha and Nora were living in Clinton, Iowa. He owned a home worth $1000 and personal assets worth $5000.
In the 1880 Federal Census, the Hall family lived in Cedar Rapids. The family consisted of Phlio, Lucretia and three daughters Nora, Mary and Helen.
In the 1900 Federal Census, Philo lived on 5th Avenue in Cedar Rapids where he owned his own home and was living with his wife Lucretia, his two daughters Bertha and Mary and with three servants. He was President of a street Railway Company.
Philo died December 11 December 1915 in Cedar Rapids.
He is buried in THE OAK HILL CEMETERY.
Wife Lucretia died in 1917 and is buried in THE OAK HILL CEMETERY.

Daughter Bertha born in 1868, died in 1918 and is buried in THE OAK HILL CEMETERY.
Daughter Nora born in 1870, married Charles Wellington Higley in 1894. Nora died in 1953 and Charles in 1936. Both are buried in THE OAK HILL CEMETERY.
Daughter Mary born in 1873, married Frederick Hoffman Smith III in 1902. Mary died in 1956 and Frederick died in 1917. Both are buried in The Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Essex County, New Jersey.
Daughter Helen born in 1875, married Frederick William Upham.
Helen died in 1975 and Frederick died in 1925. Both are buried in The Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois.
