When the disciples asked how to pray, Jesus didn't give them a technique. He gave them a relationship. The first word is "Our." The second is "Father." Everything in Christian prayer flows from those two words.

Jesus said go to your inner room and shut the door. Not because God needs the update... He doesn't. Prayer doesn't inform God; it forms us. We pray to align our hearts with His, to learn to want what He wants, to remember who we are in front of the One who made us. The closed door isn't to keep God in. It's to keep the noise out.

THIS THURSDAY: Join us for our June Theology on Tap!

💬: Death by Joy: Our Participation in the Work of Christ
📣: Connor Miller
📅: Thursday, June 18, 2026
⏰: 6:00pm; talk starts at 7:00pm
📍: Parlor City Pub and Eatery

St. John Vianney (beloved patron of the Archdiocese of Dubuque) once quipped, “If we truly understood the Mass, we would die of joy.”
While we will never fully understand this prayer of the Church on this side of the veil, it is of great importance that we continue to learn why we do what we do when we participate in it.

In his talk, Connor will aim to:
➡️explain what liturgy is
➡️explore what liturgy encompasses
➡️expound what it means for us to participate in it

We will dive into the Church’s teachings and learn how our participation in it can extend beyond church walls and into everyday life so as to “pray without ceasing.”

Connor Miller is the Director of Music and Liturgy at St. Patrick Catholic Church. He loves the Lord, loves the liturgy, and loves making music. These are a few of his favorite things. In addition to parish work, Connor serves on the CR Theology on Tap board, maintains an active graphic design practice, and serves as the Master of Ceremonies for Archdiocesan Liturgies. In his (sparing) free time, he enjoys reading, hanging out with friends, and can probably be found listening to the latest music from Cody Fry or watching an episode of Taskmaster.

Not pray that they change. Not pray that they leave. Pray FOR them. It's one of the hardest lines in the Gospel and the one that makes Christianity unmistakable

Jesus saw the crowds, troubled, abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd, and was moved with pity. Then He didn't fix it Himself. He sent the Twelve. Two thousand years later, He's still sending. The only question is whether we'll go.

St. John XXIII parish and our parishioners are a strong supporter of Mary's Meals. Mary's Meals global charity providing life-changing meals to some of the world's poorest children.
Mary's Meals film that was released in April called Lettie, which features one their school programs in Malawi (which is also where St. John XXIII sponsored school Chizungulire is located). It is the story of a young girl who received Mary's Meals starting at 10 years old, while also being an orphan who needed to care for her younger siblings. She is now a successful young lady who finished school and works for Mary's Meals in our communications department. She continues to share her inspirational story so that more children will receive the help that she once had. We are so proud to share in the mission of Mary's Meals and support this wonderful organization!

He sold his field and gave the money to the apostles. He vouched for Paul when no one else would touch him. He went wherever the Spirit pointed. The Church has always needed encouragers. Be one today.
