What's the kindest thing a stranger ever did for you?

This week Pastor Eric challenged us to five acts of kindness, even for the people who get on our last nerve. Sometimes the best way to start is to remember the times someone was kind to us for no reason at all.

I'll be honest: the church has earned some of this.

On Sunday, Pastor Eric said what a lot of people are thinking: "Institutions and large groups and organized religion get all sorts of bad press nowadays, and rightfully so in many, many ways. I know on the church side we've earned a lot of that criticism." But every institution is made of people, and Jesus calls those people to serve, not to be served.

2,400 pumpkins. 2,400 people.

Our pumpkin patch passed 2,400 sales this season, and more than 600 neighbors came out to Saturday's Fall Festival. On Sunday, Pastor Eric reminded us that every one of those numbers was a real person who walked up to our tent and was welcomed. (He also reports the squirrels have stolen a fair share of our mini pumpkins.)

Thank you to every volunteer, and to the cleanup crew who put the whole festival away in under 45 minutes. Tag someone who served this fall, and join us tonight at 6 PM for Wednesday dinner. There's always a seat.

Five acts of kindness this week. That's not even one a day.

That's Pastor Eric's challenge from Sunday's message on service. You even get two "gimme" days. The catch: write each one down, on your phone, a sticky note on the mirror, or wherever works. Small kindnesses, repeated and recorded, are how we slowly start to look more like Jesus.
