The end of the "classical" period in history is usually marked by historians not by a round-number date, but by a momentus event-the sack of Rome, the death of Boetheus, or the conversion of the Curia Julia (Roman Senate House) into the church of Sant'Adriano al Foro.

Likewise, when historians look back on our time, I have no doubt that the spiritual end of the 20th century will not be considered Y2K, but 9/11/01.

25 years ago, a on a clear day not unlike this one, an act of terrorism not only transfixed America, but transformed the era in in which we lived. A skyline reknowned throughout the world, that most of us considered nearly as immutable as a mountain range, was shrouded in dust, and emerged transformed and unfamiliar.

In the hours and days that followed, stories of scores of firefighters, EMTs, police officers, and everyday heros who sacrificed their lives for strangers and friends began to appear. Even as rage and great grief rocked our bodies, resilience crystallized in our souls.

Psalm 46:4-5 says, "There is a river whose streams make glad city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns."

The scars of this evil day are everywhere, both visible and invisible. It claimed the lives of 2,977 innocent people, and through illness, injury, grief, and strain, far more in the years to come.

We pray that today, as we mourn and reflect, God would grand us the strength not to be overcome and defined by the great evil that was done to us, but to be overwhelmed by the great good that this day brought out of so many of us.
