With Faith in Christ and hope in the Resurrection, we share the news of the departure of His Eminence Metropolitan Antonious Markos, who fell asleep in the Lord earlier today.
We extend our most heartfelt condolences to the innumerable disciples of His Eminence around the world, at the repose of a remarkable and faithful father, teacher, and indefatigable servant of Christ.
His Eminence blessed our Seminary in 2005, delivering 2 courses on the Theology of Mission. We recall also the wonderful series of books which His Eminence prepared, titled “Come Across and Help Us,” detailing the mission services and contemporary efforts of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Africa.
May God repose the soul of His Eminence Metropolitan Antonious Markos and grant us all His comfort and joy in the hope of the resurrection, and may His Eminence’s prayers be with the Church and our Seminary. Amen.

The Departure of H.E. Metropolitan Antonious Markos, Metropolitan of South Africa
رقد في الرب بشيخوخة صالحة منذ قليل نيافة الأنبا أنطونيوس مرقس مطران جنوب إفريقيا، بعد صراع مع المرض، عن عمر تجاوز ٨٩ عامًا، قضى منها قرابة خمسين في الخدمة الأسقفية.
وُلِد مثلث الرحمات في القاهرة، في ٤ سبتمبر ١٩٣٦، وخدم في منطقة الفجالة، وقرى أبو زعبل، ومنذ عام ١٩٦٦ بدأت علاقته بالخدمة في الدول الإفريقية، حيث خدم في أسمرة (عاصمة إريتريا)، ثم في دير برهان بمحافظة شوا لسنوات، كما كان مندوبًا للكنيسة القبطية في المؤتمرات الإفريقية.
ترهب بدير القديس الأنبا بيشوي بوادي النطرون في عام ١٩٧٥، ثم سيم أسقفًا عامًّا لشؤون إفريقيا في ١٣ يونيو ١٩٧٦ بيد مثلث الرحمات البابا شنودة الثالث، ورُسِم مطرانًا لجنوب إفريقيا بيد قداسة البابا تواضروس الثاني في ٩ يونيو ٢٠١٩.

H.E. Metropolitan Antonious Markos, Metropolitan of South Africa, has reposed in the Lord a short while ago following a battle with illness in a blessed old age of 89 years, of which he spent nearly fifty years in episcopal ministry.
The thrice-blessed metropolitan was born in Cairo on September 4, 1936. He served in the district of El-Faggala and in the villages of Abu Zaabal. From 1966, his ministry in the African nations began, serving in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, then for years in the Monastery of Burhan in the province of Shoa. He also represented the Coptic Church in various African conferences.
He was ordained a monk in Saint Bishoy's Monastery, Wadi El-Natroun in 1975. He was then ordained General Bishop for African Affairs on June 13, 1976, by the thrice-blessed H.H. Pope Shenouda III. Later, he was ordained Metropolitan of South Africa by H.H. Pope Tawadros II on June 9, 2019.
