"And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you." - John 16:22
I've been thinking a lot about this Joy during this Easter Season (yes, I'm aware Easter was yesterday), but last night I heard someone mention this scripture. At this point in the scriptures, Jesus is talking to His disciples. He tells His friends that He's not going to be with them for a while because He will be with the Father, and that for that period of time when He won't be with them, they're going to be full of sorrow. But then He tells them that He'll be back, and when they get to see Him again, they'll be filled with so much joy, that nobody can take that away from them!
And it made me think about my own life. There have been a lot of times where it felt as though Jesus had left me. During those times, I felt a lot of sorrow, a lot of pain, maybe even some guilt or anger. But every time that happened, I ended up finding Him again. He always came back. It took me a while to realize it, but oftentimes it's like with Thomas, where I'm looking right at Him and don't even realize it until He shows me in a very personal way that it really was Him all along--that He was always with me and I just couldn't see it.
I love the promise made in this verse, that when we see Him again--when we find Him again--we will have so much joy that nobody will be able to take it from us! This is a beautiful promise, one that we see over and over again throughout the scriptures any time we are asked to keep commandments and to make and keep covenants that bring us closer to Christ--which makes sense when you realize that keeping those covenants and commandments help us to find Him.
Continue to look for Christ, and you will find Him, even if it's in the smallest, most mundane thing, and when you do, take note of that joy that you feel. Write it down, take a picture of the moment, do whatever you need to do so you can remember it. Because those are the moments that will help carry you through until the next time you see Him again.
