This Weekend:

NWS updates show decreasing snow totals for Roanoke: from 4+” yesterday to 1.4” now. Areas south of Roanoke may still see a decent snowfall.

Services will proceed as usual on Saturday and Sunday. Updates will follow if weather conditions change.

Allow extra travel time due to blowing snow, which could make driving more difficult. Dress warmly for Sunday morning — it’s expected to be quite cold, and our heating system may struggle to reach 60 degrees inside the church.

I look forward to seeing you all soon!

WINTER STORM ADJUSTED SCHEDULE

Friday (tonight!):
5:00pm - Confessions
6:00pm - Great Vespers

Saturday (tomorrow):
8:15 - 3rd and 6th Hours
8:30am - Divine Liturgy

I'm sure everyone is aware by now that we have a serious winter storm coming in this weekend. It looks like snow is supposed to start late Saturday afternoon or evening. Since there is quite a bit of ice anticipated with this storm, I encourage everyone to make preparations (food, water, alternative heat source) if you haven't already. Bitter cold will follow the storm for many days.

Travel will likely be treacherous this weekend - especially Saturday evening and Sunday morning. With that in mind, we are going to adjust our schedule so everyone gets a chance to worship and partake of the Eucharist several hours before the storm's anticipated onset. To be clear, there are no services Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

We're starting Liturgy earlier than usual on Saturday to ensure everyone has time to travel back home and complete any final preparations before the storm. No coffee hour will follow.

We'll potentially have a huge snowstorm hit this weekend! Please keep a close eye on our church calendar on our website near the end of the week.

Right now, some models are showing 15" of snow on Saturday to Sunday. This far out, that could be greatly exaggerated or it could be accurate. Either way, if it's a major snowstorm, and it hits Saturday/Sunday, then we may attempt to do Friday Vespers and Saturday Liturgy.

All that is completely dependent upon when the storm arrives, how severe it is, and how far in advance we know about the timing of the onset of the snow.

Let's put Christ back in Christmas by attending church this year. There's nothing more beautiful and appropriate than gathering with others to worship Christ on His birthday. If you've already made plans to be out of town, then please join us for Sunday Liturgy.

Sunday: 9:30am Divine Liturgy
Christmas Eve: 6pm Great Compline
Christmas: 9am Divine Liturgy

From today's Gospel reading:

“Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod” (Mark 8:15).

The leaven of the Pharisees is using religion as a pretense to impress others. The leaven of Herod is placing our faith in politics. We must “take heed, beware,” because these are both great temptations that can come to us in subtle ways.

Both leavens offer us something that we want in life: control. Most of us think, “If only others thought like me, believed like me, voted like me, cared for the issues that I care for, then this world would be a better place.” And so we seek to place our focus in life on either the leaven of the Pharisees or the leaven of Herod, desiring to change the world around us.

But Christ offers us inner transformation. St. Seraphim of Sarov famously said, “Acquire the Holy Spirit, and a thousand around you will be saved.” Anything that offers us less than “the kingdom of heaven within” (Luke 17:21) is a cheap substitute at best.

Do you want to change the world? Do you want to make life better for yourself and others? Then we must begin by working on ourselves, becoming precious vessels of the Holy Spirit with faith and love in Christ.

Eleven souls brought into the Orthodox Church on the Sunday after Theophany! It would have been Theophany itself, but alas, another ice storm this year. Here's to hoping we'll celebrate Theophany on Theophany one of these years!
