* Week 2 | Faith & Riches: Read James 1:9-18.
This week we get to read God’s perspective on wealth, endurance, and resisting temptation. Let’s dig in and hear what He has for us this week!
*Reminder*
Summer Challenge:
1. Practice “being still” with the Lord
2. Read James Bible passage for the day
3. Try doing a 24 hour “social media fast” (or 12 hour fast) before beginning the challenge
4. Commit to 5–10 minutes of uninterrupted time daily.
- Mornings are good before the day’s stress and demands take over. Evenings are good too after processing the day’s activities and stresses.
- There is no “best” time, the idea is to be intentional in setting time aside daily – namely the same time, if possible, to put everything away – and just being still with God.
5. Find your quiet space.
- First - turn off your phone or put it a few feet away to avoid the temptation to scroll.
- Eliminate noise, by going to a quiet place where you cannot be easily distracted.
- Being still does not mean you have to sit still. Going for a walk in nature, gazing at the stars beholding God’s majesty can help engage your heart and mind and help you focus on God. Being with God helps with letting go of stresses, finding rest and allows worship.
6. Journal or draw.
- If you get easily distracted with thoughts (anxious, busy or distracting thoughts), writing things out can clear your mind and help the mind and heart to clear and be still with God.
7. What to “do”
- Spend time in silence. Ask the Lord to help you be still. Spend time talking with God about things in your life, asking Him for guidance, wisdom, and peace etc. Spend time reading the bible passage for the week.
But ultimately – learn how to simply be still in a world of non-stop business and distractions is the goal. Learning that you don’t need to be constantly entertained or busy is key to a healthy spiritual life with God.
8. Be patient with yourself –
- It takes time to learn how to be still with God. At first it may feel odd, but give it time.

James starts off with a hard challenge -
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,”
‭‭James‬ ‭1‬:‭2‬

According to verses 1-4:
1. What is the ultimate purpose behind the testing of your faith?
2. How does this perspective change how you view a current challenge in your life?

According to verses 5-8:
3. What does James advise us to do if we are in need of help and direction?
4. What is the warning against asking with doubt?
5. What does the metaphor “a wave of the sea” described as a “double-minded” person mean?
6. What are some things we can go to God with for help & advice?
7. What does James warn us about in vs. 6 when seeking God for help?
8. How does he describe the person who doubts?
9. Have you ever felt “double-minded” or “unstable” in your thoughts? How did this affect you emotionally and mentally?
10. How can we grow a deeper foundation when we are struggling to trust God?

Congrats! Hopefully you have been reading through this passage daily so far - I hope to have study q’s for you every Wednesday to help aid in your daily quiet time with the Lord.

Keep reading through this passage for the rest of the week - and if you’re really adventurous- try memorizing it. James is a great book to try to memorize.

The teens are being challenged to take time each day to read an assigned passage from the book of James this summer.

We'd love for you to join us!
Each week I will try to post the reading portion for the week for you to meditate on and journal about.

This is only being done via online - not in person.
Enjoy!

Week 1: Read James 1:1-8 everyday.
The focus is on "Endurance and Trials."

Summer Challenge:
1. Practice learning how to “be still” with the Lord
2. James Bible Study
3. Try doing a 24 hour “social media fast" (or 12 hour fast) before beginning the challenge
4. Commit to 5–10 minutes of uninterrupted time daily.
- Mornings work best for some to start their day before the day's stress and demands take over. Others find evenings work best before going to sleep, to process the day’s activities and stresses so they can sleep better.
- There is no “best” time, the idea is to be intentional in setting time aside daily – namely the same time, if possible, to put everything away – and just being still with God.
5. Find your quiet space.
- First thing to do - turn off your phone or put it a few feet away to avoid the temptation to scroll.
- Eliminate noise, if possible, by going to your bedroom and closing the door or finding a quiet corner in your home or anywhere you cannot be easily distracted.
- Being still with God does not mean you have to sit still. Going for a walk in nature can help you focus on God and can be restful and helpful in letting go of stresses. Sitting and gazing at the stars beholding God’s majesty can help engage your heart and mind to rest and worship.
6. Journal or draw.
- If you get easily distracted with thoughts (anxious, busy or distracting thoughts), writing things out can clear your mind and help the mind and heart to clear and be still with God.

What a night! Gosh we love these people!

Be Still…
Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God…” NIV
“Cease striving and know that I am God…” NASB
“Be quiet and know that I am God…” NLV

What does it mean to be still?
The Hebrew word used here is raphah, which literally means "to let go," "relax," or "cease striving."

Who likes being told what to do?
In this verse, God is giving us a command to release our daily stresses, our worries, our business, our distractions, our fears to Him, and to stop trying to do it all on our own or to fight battles we were never meant to fight or carry alone, and give Him complete control – because He is good, He is trustworthy and He is far more capable than we are to carry the load of this world.

How do we normally handle our daily stresses, our worries, our business, our distractions, and our fears?
We fill it with something – tap out and dead scroll, watch tv, play video games, fixate or let anxious thoughts control us, distract ourselves with something or someone, sleep, eat, over obsess in another area, etc.

How often do we choose to, “be still…let go…be quiet…or cease striving…”?

Do we know why we need to be still?
1. Psalm 46 tells us in verse 1, 2 why it’s worth your time learning how to be still with God.
“God is our safe place and our strength. He is always our help when we are in trouble. 2 So we will not be afraid, even if the earth is shaken and the mountains fall into the center of the sea, 3 and even if its waters go wild with storm and the mountains shake with its action.” NLV
2. Psalm 46 also tells us what our role is in learning more about God in verse 8.
“Come and see what the Lord has done…” NIV
“Come and behold the works of the Lord…” NKJV
3. Psalm 46 then closes with a command for those who trust in God.
“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” 11 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.”

How to be still.
1. Commit to 5–10 minutes of uninterrupted time daily.
2. Find your quiet space.
3. Journal or draw.
4. What to “do”.
5. Be patient with yourself.
