Saint of the Week: St. Peter Claver

St. Peter Claver spent his life serving enslaved people with compassion and defending their God-given dignity.

He saw people who were being treated unjustly and refused to look away.

His life reminds us that Christian love is not passive.

Love notices.
Love responds.
Love serves.

This week, as we hear Jesus teach about loving our neighbor, St. Peter Claver gives us a powerful example of what that love can look like in action.

His feast day is September 9.

Family Discussion: What Does Love Have to Do With Correction?

Jesus tells us that when someone does something wrong, we shouldn't immediately tell everyone else.

He says to begin by speaking with that person privately.

Why?

Because their dignity matters.

Tonight, talk together about this:

💬 Why can it be hard to tell someone they have done something wrong?

💬 What is the difference between correcting someone and gossiping about them?

💬 How would you want someone to speak to you if you made a mistake?

💬 Why do you think Jesus tells us to begin privately?

And one more question:

Are we willing to listen when someone lovingly corrects us?

Christian love isn't about being right.

It's about seeking the good of the other person.

Today we give thanks for the work that helps our families, communities, and world flourish.

Every honest job has dignity—not because of a title or paycheck, but because the person doing the work has dignity.

Whether we work with our hands, care for a family, teach, build, serve, create, protect, or help others, our work can become an expression of love.

Today, let’s remember and pray for all who work, those seeking work, and those whose work often goes unseen.

May we never measure a person’s worth by the work they do.

“Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord.”
— Colossians 3:23

This Week at Mass: Love Speaks the Truth

This Sunday, Jesus teaches His disciples something that can be difficult to live:

Sometimes love means speaking up.

But Christian correction isn't about embarrassing someone, winning an argument, or making sure everyone knows what happened.

Jesus gives us a different way.

Speak privately.
Listen.
Tell the truth with charity.
Protect the dignity of the other person.
Seek reconciliation.

And remember: we are called to accept correction, too.

St. Paul reminds us why:

“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
— Romans 13:9

Love doesn't ignore what is wrong.

Love seeks the good of the other.

This week, listen for how the readings connect truth, love, forgiveness, and peace.

Family Prayer: Help Us Follow You

Before tomorrow’s Mass, take a quiet moment together.

Light a candle if you have one. Sit together. Take a breath.

Then pray:

Leader: Jesus, You call us to follow You.

Family: Help us follow You with faithful hearts.

Leader: When doing what is right is difficult…

Family: Give us courage.

Leader: When loving someone requires sacrifice…

Family: Teach us to love generously.

Leader: When we are tempted to choose ourselves first…

Family: Help us remember Your example.

Leader: When we are tired or discouraged…

Family: Help us keep going.

Leader: Jesus, help our family take up our crosses and follow You.

All: Amen.

Tomorrow, we gather again at Mass to hear God’s Word and receive the strength to live it.

Family Action: Choose to Serve

Jesus didn’t simply tell His disciples to follow Him.

He showed them what self-giving love looks like.

Today, choose one small act of service that you would normally expect someone else to do.

Maybe you:

🟢 Help with a chore without being asked.
🟢 Help a sibling.
🟢 Check on someone who is having a difficult day.
🟢 Give someone your time and attention.
🟢 Do something kind without looking for recognition.

Then remember:

Following Jesus means putting love into action.

❤️ Don’t announce it. Don’t wait for praise. Just serve.

Sometimes following Jesus means making a choice.

Not between good and bad—but between what is easiest and what is loving.

What would the Jesus way look like?

Someone hurts your feelings.

The easy way: Hold a grudge.
The Jesus way: Forgive.

Someone is sitting alone.

The easy way: Ignore them.
The Jesus way: Include them.

You made a mistake.

The easy way: Blame someone else.
The Jesus way: Tell the truth.

Someone needs help.

The easy way: Let someone else do it.
The Jesus way: Serve.

Following Jesus isn’t just something we believe.

It is a way of living.

Saint of the Week: St. Teresa of Calcutta

St. Teresa of Calcutta spent her life responding to Jesus’ call through self-giving love and service.

She served people who were poor, sick, dying, abandoned, and forgotten - not because it was easy, but because she believed every person was worthy of love and dignity.

Her life gives us a beautiful example of what Jesus means when He says:

“Take up your cross, and follow me.”

Following Jesus can mean giving our time, our attention, our comfort, and our gifts for the sake of someone else.

We don’t have to do something extraordinary to follow Christ.

Sometimes discipleship looks like simply noticing someone who needs help - and choosing to serve.

St. Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us!
