I shared this in my weekly From The Intersection article:
I don’t know about you, but this week my Facebook and Instagram feeds have been inundated with good people standing up to evil and injustices across this land and this world. I have become witness to the Gospel message being embodied in the characteristic of what it once was through God’s people. God’s people speaking prophetically against the evils and injustices, risking physical threat to bodily harm, loss of job, and monetary insecurities. Six months ago we were wondering what we could say or what we should say to things we were seeing come out of Washington. We were wondering out loud, asking ourselves when someone would take a stand and speak truth to power.
Well, the time has come, and we are all witnessing the people of God rise up and shout prophetically. They are stepping aside to inhibit unjust legislature from becoming law, and putting their bodies in front of immigrant neighbors to protect them from being kidnapped, and calling out corrupt people of influence for what they are. The hands-in-pockets shy and doubtful stance is turning into a leaning in fists in the air eye locked posture of power and grounding.
We are becoming witnesses to the people of God calling out the pharisees and the emperor, the tax collectors and the imperialist elites. The money changers might just see their tables flipped over and their income threatened. The God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, of Sarah, Rebecah and Ruth is about to part the metaphorical sea, heal the sick, and feed the multitude. Can you sense it?
The one thing that God always did was show up, in unlikely characters, and in impossible ways. The hope we have as people of faith is that this same God will show up just as always. God will use us and each other to shout prophetically, and to preach a message of compassion, love, and justice. Are you ready to believe the stories we’ve been hearing Sunday after Sunday? Are you ready to invite the Holy Spirit to do what it always does – rush through it all like a roaring wind transforming us all into the body of Christ? Spirit is moving, and we are called to trust in the Word of God, speak prophetically, and respond with a compassion and love that conquered even death. May that we continue to seek the ways God is being revealed, and stoke the embers of the Spirit. May we be the people of God.
Here’s to Spirit moving us in new directions and with a renewed mission!
