A special message from our stake presidency 1st counselor, President Clark, as we approach stake conference this weekend (to be held at 6pm on Saturday, 10am on Sunday, & a leadership session at 3pm on Saturday) …

“The first section of the D&C contains an amazing principle of the restored Gospel: ‘My word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same’. D&C 1:38. I am grateful that Pres. Jeffrey R. Holland has sent an Area Seventy, Elder Bunker, to preside at our stake conference and to declare the word of the Lord. Those who pray, speak, sing and attend will also participate in declaring the Word of the Lord. Many years ago, I counted the number of sections of the D&C that contained revelations that were given shortly before, during, or after conferences of the church. I counted x (out of 138). As you come prepared to receive the word of the Lord, I know that you will recognize it and, through the Holy Ghost, know how it applies to you. Come and See! (John 1:39).”

“My great, great grandparents (Thomas and Syrina Biggs), were part of the first company Brigham Young sent to this area to settle.  About a year after this, their daughter and husband, Deborah Biggs Nelson, and William Nelson (pictured below), decided to join them.  Leaving Provo, Utah with several other families, they made the long and dangerous trip. Just a few days into their trip, William remembered he had some unfinished business back home, and returned to take care of it.  The other families were afraid to wait and moved on, leaving Deborah and her children alone.  William soon returned and they set off to catch up to the rest of the group, travelling during the day and resting at night.  Local Indian tribes had been known to raid traveling parties in this area, and so when Indians came into their camp one evening, they expected the worst.   However, all they asked for was food. They readily gave them beans and what other food they could manage, and asked why they hadn’t attacked them and just taken the things they wanted.  They replied that they had seen them gather in a circle and kneel like the Indians do and they feared what the Great Spirit would do to them if they did attach. Instead, they decided to ask for food and find out what kind of people they really were. This incident happened two or three times on the way to the Lehi Valley while they were traveling apart from the rest of the group.
What a wonderful example of the power of prayer, and knowing there is a loving Father in Heaven that listens to our prayers, and can soften people’s hearts.”

“JOY TO THE WORLD! The Lord is come!  And all those that hope in Christ rejoice in His coming! The wise man in "The Christ Child" video https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/media/video/2019-09-0050-the-christ-child?lang=eng&collectionId=1cc5702d9b6c434084534d88ff744c65
had hope in His coming as he searched and prepared his mind and heart to find the Savior. I love how so much of the world is filled with joy and extra love at Christmastime, as we rejoice in our knowledge of the Savior's birth and his fulfilling his mission to save all mankind. Even as the world has struggled together these past twenty-something months, we find joy together in the hope that the Savior's gifts bring.
"Be of good courage and He shall strengthen your heart, ALL ye that hope in the Lord."    -- Psalm 31:24
Let's pray that our light can help others feel the love of our Father and have hope in the "matchless gift of His divine Son".

“For me, when I study my scriptures I have to make it thoughtful to get much from it. That ponder part of “search, ponder, and pray” is the key to me. This has its ups and downs. For example, I like listing to audio books and podcasts. So, naturally I will listen to scriptures and talks. And while I think my life is blessed for listening to these things, I have felt that taking in all that information at once does not leave much room for pondering on what I learned. It is “that was nice. Oh look, another one.” There are times a sit down to read the Come Follow Me passages for the week and I don’t finish because I was focused on one verse or even one line. And then I have to remind myself that it is ok that I didn’t read the rest of the section, I still read something and I learned something along the way.

As a family we read every morning. If we’re feeling creative we will do fun little crafts on a Sunday afternoon that help us learn about the scripture we read. I love seeing my children grow in the gospel. Teaching them makes my personal study more meaningful.

I am thankful for the scriptures. It inspires me to be a better man. When I make my study more ponderous and focused on my family’s goals I feel closer to my Savior and more equipped to face the world.”

At the Church’s Mesa Welcome Center for Immigrants, we teach language and culture classes to immigrants and refugees. It’s a blessing to follow the Church’s admonition that “members offer their time, talents, and friendship to welcome refugees as members of their communities.”

Our students arrive determined, grateful, and eager to learn, and we seek to empower them with hope. It’s a pleasure to make dear friends of strangers as we seek to follow the Lord’s counsel: “The stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself” (Lev. 19:34).

“Mindi and I were asked to assist with our stake’s efforts supporting the Temple Open House. We have been a part of many planning and coordination meetings, the Stake Youth Service Day, and gathering the names of many of our members to serve over the next several weeks. We have been humbled to see almost 500 members of our stake volunteer to help people come and see the Lord’s house, in addition to the almost 200 youth who came together to serve our neighbors around us. In just 3 hours, the youth worked the equivalent of almost 72 days of work for one person. Now, we have the opportunity to serve at the open house each week welcoming visitors to the temple.

There have been times during the past several weeks where there has been a lot to do in addition to our careers and callings. At times, it has even been quite stressful. Through it all, we have been able to witness the Lord’s hand in bringing about the Open House ahead of the rededication. His guidance and the faithfulness of so many in our Stake has been a great example to us of how important this temple is. The work performed in His temple really does help us to move closer to Him, and we cannot wait for it to be dedicated so that we can get back there as often as we can.”
