Under new Department of War guidance, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is reportedly categorized separately from groups listed as Christian.

Whatever theological disagreements others may have, a faith centered on JESUS CHRIST, His teachings, His atoning sacrifice, and His resurrection should not have its Christian identity defined by politicians or bureaucrats.

Political movements come and go. Discipleship of Jesus Christ endures.

Defense Secretary Hegseth previously announced the change due to an "impractical" system.

Today our Castro Valley 1st Ward held a special 5th Sunday discussion led by Brother Adam Brown centered on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.

One thing I appreciated was that the discussion stayed focused on principles rather than politics. The video discussion featuring President D. Todd Christofferson and Elder Quentin L. Cook emphasized moral agency, religious liberty, the rule of law, civic responsibility, and the importance of seeking unity and mutual respect even when we disagree. They also reminded us that the Constitution was not perfect when it was written, but has been strengthened over time through amendments that abolished slavery and expanded voting rights.

A quote that stood out was President Oaks' invitation to "seek to moderate and unify" on contested issues and to focus on the principles that transcend political parties.

If you haven't watched the video yet, we would encourage you to do so. Whether you agree with every point or not, it provides a thoughtful discussion about faith, freedom, citizenship, and the role of moral character in sustaining a free society.
