Luke 17:5-6 ESV
The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!” And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.'"
Jesus' point to his disciples is not "you only need a little faith to do great things... so think what you can do with a dump truck load."
His point is that faith is not about your amount. This idea makes it about us: Do I have enough faith? Is it sincere enough? Do I believe hard enough?
Instead the whole point of faith is that 'I'm not enough. God is."
Faith like a mustard seed is faith in the God who is truly sovereign over the universe and the lives of people regardless of how good I am at believing that. It only takes a little because the God whom that faith is placed in is enough independent of me. So if I believe and act in faith at all, God is faithful to be the same... whether my faith is a mustard seed or a dump truck.
