Important note from the Bishop Edward M. Rice of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau:

Catholics are obliged to attend Sunday Mass unless excused for a serious reason, such as illness, infirmity, care of the sick, or dangerous weather conditions. Those who are unable to attend Mass due to dangerous weather conditions, unsafe roads, or a well-founded fear for their safety are not bound by the obligation to attend Mass.

Canon law itself recognizes the obligation does not bind under these types of circumstances. Canon 1247 establishes the obligation to participate in Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation. However, Canon 1248 §2 states that when participation in the Eucharistic celebration becomes impossible for a serious reason, such as illness or another grave cause, the obligation does not bind, and the faithful are encouraged to devote themselves to prayer personally or as a family. Dangerous travel conditions or the reasonable fear of such conditions constitute a serious reason.

As an alternative, if possible, participate in a Live-streamed liturgy. We are praying that you stay warm and safe.

Father Bill (St Edward’s) and Father Matt (Holy Family) will be saying Mass on Saturday and Sunday at normal Mass times. PLEASE do NOT attempt to go out if it is unsafe to do so.
