📺 The Philokalia Series with Metropolitan Kallistos on Youtube for free! 📺
Over 10 years ago, OLTV recorded an introductory lecture on the Philokalia by Metropolitan Kallistos Ware. That talk became one of our all-time favorites, with over 50,000 views on Youtube.
Recently, the remaining five lectures have been made available on our YouTube channel—free for everyone to watch. These talks follow up on the theme of the Philokalia, diving deeper into the wisdom of the Fathers and the call to unceasing prayer in daily life.
The Philokalia was born in a time of crisis, reminding Eastern Christians of their deepest identity through prayer, inner renewal, and continually seeking of God. That timeless message is just as urgent today: prayer is not confined to monasteries but belongs to every believer.
Watch the full 6-part series here for free: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaH-GyuIDAg&list=PLAVUi2N7KxM52KDCxlzNDjiePkbhxjGE1

Did you know that life begins at conception?

In the Orthodox faith, life is a sacred gift from God, and it begins the moment He gives it. That’s at conception. From the very first instant, we believe that a new, unrepeatable human person has come into being, created in the image and likeness of God. It’s not a “potential” life. It is life.

This isn’t just philosophical; it’s reflected in our liturgical life too. One of the clearest examples is the Feast of the Annunciation (March 25), when we celebrate the moment the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary and she said “yes” to bearing Christ. That feast marks the conception of Jesus, and we treat it as the moment His Incarnation began. In other words, God became human not at His birth, but at His conception.

The Church carries this same view forward when it speaks about all human life. It’s why we pray for unborn children, why we honor Saints who died in the womb or in infancy, and why we speak of the unborn with the same dignity we give anyone else.

So, while “birth” in a biological sense happens later, personhood in the Orthodox understanding begins at conception. That child is known and loved by God from the first moment, and so is never “anonymous” or “future.” Life, from the very start, is sacred. And it is always worth protecting.
