Did you know that life begins at conception?
In the Orthodox faith, life is a sacred gift from God, and it begins the moment He gives it. That’s at conception. From the very first instant, we believe that a new, unrepeatable human person has come into being, created in the image and likeness of God. It’s not a “potential” life. It is life.
This isn’t just philosophical; it’s reflected in our liturgical life too. One of the clearest examples is the Feast of the Annunciation (March 25), when we celebrate the moment the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary and she said “yes” to bearing Christ. That feast marks the conception of Jesus, and we treat it as the moment His Incarnation began. In other words, God became human not at His birth, but at His conception.
The Church carries this same view forward when it speaks about all human life. It’s why we pray for unborn children, why we honor Saints who died in the womb or in infancy, and why we speak of the unborn with the same dignity we give anyone else.
So, while “birth” in a biological sense happens later, personhood in the Orthodox understanding begins at conception. That child is known and loved by God from the first moment, and so is never “anonymous” or “future.” Life, from the very start, is sacred. And it is always worth protecting.
