Today's Message from Pope Leo XIV

Monday, June 8, 2026

“God is near, God loves you. This explains why he proclaims: 'Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.' God shows a preference for the poor: the Lord’s words of hope and liberation are addressed first of all to them.”

Pope Leo XIV

Friends, in today’s Gospel (Matthew 5:1–12), Jesus goes up a mountain and sits down to teach. In the Old Testament, we find Moses, the great teacher, also going up a mountain to receive the law and then sitting down to teach it. However, Jesus is not receiving a law; he is giving one.

Theologian N. T. Wright has pointed out that the Old Testament is essentially an unfinished symphony. It is the articulation of a hope but without a realization of that hope. Thus, as the fulfillment of Israel’s entire story, Jesus begins his primary teaching with the Beatitudes, a title that stems from the Latin noun “beatitudo,“ meaning “happy” or “blessed.”

Through this series of paradoxes, surprises, and reversals, Jesus begins setting a topsy-turvy universe aright. How should we understand them? A key is the Greek word “makarios,” rendered “blessed” or “happy” or perhaps even “lucky,” which is used to start each of the Beatitudes.

And so, “Blessed are the poor in spirit.” We might say, “How lucky you are if you are not addicted to material things.” Here Jesus is telling us how to realize our deepest desire, which is the desire for God and not for passing things that only bring temporary comfort.

Preparation for Communion

Meditation:
During Holy Mass, I saw the Infant Jesus in the chalice, and He said to me. I am dwelling in your heart as you see Me in this chalice (Diary, 1820).

Most pleasing to Me is this preparation with which you have received Me into your heart. Today, in a special way I bless this your joy. Nothing will disturb that joy throughout this day … (Diary, 1824).

My Prayer Response:
Lord Jesus, help me and all who receive You in Holy Communion with a more fervent preparation, so our hearts may be changed. May we sing this song in our hearts:

Change my heart, O God,
Make it ever true.
Change my heart, O God.
May I be like You!
You are the Potter, I am the clay.
Mold me and make me.
This is what I pray.

Saint of the Day (The Morning Offering, The Catholic Company)
St. William of York

Patron Satin of: York and adopted children
Feast Day: June 8

St. William of York (d. 1154) was born to a powerful family in England, the nephew of the king. He became a priest and then treasurer of York Minster Cathedral at the time when the English crown was contested by two grandchildren of William the Conqueror. When the Archbishop of York died, William was chosen to take his place. Kind-hearted and generous to the poor, he was well-liked by the people; however, he faced political and ecclesiastical opposition from the rival to the English throne. Because he was consecrated without papal approval, William was accused of wrongdoing by those who wanted their preferred prelate in the position; even St. Bernard of Clairvaux opposed him. Although he eventually confirmed William’s appointment, the Pope died before the pallium was given, and the new pope took the side of William’s detractors. A new archbishop was ordained in his place while William went to live as a monk with his uncle, a bishop, in quiet prayer and penance. The people of York, upset that their favorite had been deposed, took to rioting. Six years later the Archbishop of York died, and another new pope made William the successor. The people were overjoyed at his return—so many came to greet him as he entered the city that a bridge collapsed under their weight; the fact that no one was hurt was considered a miracle. A few months later, after celebrating Mass on Trinity Sunday, William became ill and died. Poisoning was suspected but never confirmed. Miracles took place at his tomb which gave rise to his canonization in 1227. His feast day is June 8th.

Thoughts on Today's Gospel (The Morning Offering, The Catholic Company)

“For God is seen by those who are enabled to see Him when they have the eyes of their soul opened: for all have eyes; but in some they are overspread, and do not see the light of the sun.” (Saint Theophilus of Antioch)

“The individual Beatitudes are the fruit of the looking of Jesus upon the disciples; they describe their actual condition: they are poor, hungry, weeping men; they are hated and persecuted... In spite of the concrete threatening situation, this becomes a promise when you look at it with the provident light which comes from the Father.” (Benedict XVI)

“The Beatitudes depict the countenance of Jesus Christ and portray his charity. They express the vocation of the faithful associated with the glory of his Passion and Resurrection; they shed light on the actions and attitudes characteristic of the Christian life; they are the paradoxical promises that sustain hope in the midst of tribulations (…)” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, Nº 1717)

Today's Meditation (The Morning Offering, The Catholic Company)

“Man was created for a certain end. This end is to praise, to reverence and to serve the Lord his God and by this means to arrive at eternal salvation. All other beings and objects that surround us on the earth were created for the benefit of man and to be useful to him, as means to his final end; hence his obligation to use, or to abstain from the use of, these creatures, according as they bring him nearer to that end, or tend to separate him from it.”
—St. Ignatius of Loyola, p. 18

Peace be with you!
Let's keep praying that we might have hearts that are conformed to Jesus'.

Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 121:1bc-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8
R. (see 2) Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
I lift up my eyes toward the mountains;
whence shall help come to me?
My help is from the LORD,
who made heaven and earth.
R. Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
May he not suffer your foot to slip;
may he slumber not who guards you:
Indeed he neither slumbers nor sleeps,
the guardian of Israel.
R. Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
The LORD is your guardian; the LORD is your shade;
he is beside you at your right hand.
The sun shall not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
R. Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
The LORD will guard you from all evil;
he will guard your life.
The LORD will guard your coming and your going,
both now and forever.
R. Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Gospel
Matthew 5:1-12
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain,
and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him.
He began to teach them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you
and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.
Rejoice and be glad,
for your reward will be great in heaven.
Thus they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
