“Oh, clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to God with the voice of triumph! For the Lord Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth” Psalm 47:1-2 The scene is set – a congregation is gathered for worship, the musicians are in their places, there is a buzz in the air – great anticipation. Suddenly the music begins and the people rise to their feet and begin raising their hands, jumping for joy and singing with all their might! [ 748 more words ]

“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:3 I remember the days when my son was only 4 years old and we would sit together in this overstuffed chair in our living room, he on my lap, and he would go on and on talking about his day, or something he saw, or sing his favorite song to me. I once had a very difficult encounter with a ministry colleague many years ago in South Carolina that ended in this person yelling and saying some terribly hurtful things to me. I was so astounded at this person’s response to me that I literally could not speak. I left their home with a toxic mixture of hurt, anger, confusion, and a lot of other emotions I’d rather not admit to! [ 912 more words ]

Spirit & Truth Part 4 of 4 Part Series “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.” John 4:23 In this final installment in this series, we are looking at the two important qualities of worship shared with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well in the Gospel of John - spirit and truth – and how we benefit from worshiping the living God in this way. “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 These references to “praying continuously”, and “pray without ceasing” used to intimidate me. Images of Gregorian Monks walking the grounds of monastery in constant prayer come to mind. Living a life that is 100% devoted to prayer is a higher bar than anyone can clear spiritually. A little girl says to her Mother after running across a busy street, “Mom, you’re saying with your mouth that you’re glad I’m safe, but your face is telling me I may not be so safe!” We send mixed messages every day, encounters where we are upset, but try to put on a socially acceptable face, and add in the elements of sarcasm, and there is a lot of “double-speak” in our daily lives. Song Story: “This Is Amazing Grace” “Who breaks the power of sin and darkness?” The contemporary worship music community is moving more and more to collaborative songwriting these days. If you look at the long list of composers who write their music with other worship leaders/composers, it’s a “Who’s Who” of great and influential contributors to the worshiping church. (Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Paul Baloche, Lincoln Brewster, Joel Houston, etc…) Worship songs these days have an interesting history and development as they are shared, revived, and rewritten to become the powerful vessels that bring people into God’s presence.
