Exodus 20:1–7 — No Other Gods but the Lord
These verses introduce the Ten Commandments. God had delivered the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, and He was teaching them how to live as His people. His commands called them to faithfulness, obedience, and reverence.
Verse 1 — God speaks
“And God spake all these words, saying,”
These instructions came from God Himself. His people needed to listen carefully and take His words seriously.
Daily application: Make time to hear God through His Word, and be willing to obey what He teaches.
Verse 2 — Remember your Deliverer
“I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.”
Before giving the commandments, God reminded Israel of who He was and what He had done for them. He had rescued them from slavery and established a relationship with them.
Daily application: Remembering God’s goodness helps us obey Him with gratitude and love.
Verse 3 — Worship God alone
“Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”
God required Israel’s complete devotion. “Before me” does not mean other gods are acceptable as long as God comes first. His people were to worship Him alone.
Daily application: Examine whether money, relationships, success, or personal desires are receiving the devotion that belongs to God.
Verses 4–5 — Do not make or worship idols
God commanded His people not to make images to bow down to or serve. Nothing created could take His place or become an object of worship.
God describes Himself as a “jealous God.” This means He is committed to His covenant relationship with His people and requires their faithfulness. The warning about generations shows how deeply sin and unfaithfulness can affect families.
Daily application: Worship the living God. Consider how your choices influence the faith and habits of the next generation.
Verse 6 — God shows mercy
“And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.”
Alongside His warning, God promises mercy. Loving Him and obeying Him belong together. Our obedience is a response to His love and deliverance.
Daily application: Show your love for God through your choices, your treatment of others, and your faithfulness to His Word.
Verse 7 — Honor God’s name
“Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.”
God’s name represents His holy character and authority. Taking His name in vain includes using it carelessly, swearing falsely by it, or invoking it to support dishonesty.
Daily application: Speak of God with reverence. Let your words and conduct honor the One you claim to follow.
Main lesson: Remember what God has done, worship Him alone, and honor His name in both speech and action.
Questions for reflection:
1. What has God brought me through that I need to remember?
2. Is anything competing for the devotion I owe God?
3. Do my words and actions show respect for His name?
