Hey Y’all! Tomorrow night at 7pm. This part two of the lecture series “What’s in your Bible?” If you were not there for the first lecture, this one will not make a lot of sense the second lecture is going to dive into some of the details of the manuscript history of the Old Testament. Specifically looking within the books themselves and how they give us clues of how they came into existence and how they were written. Again, this whole lecture series is hoping to set the foundation of understanding where the Bible came from. One of the first of many goals is to get the basic facts. And the second goal is, in light of where the Bible came from, that ought to deepen and give us a much more rich sense of what the Bible is as a human word, through which God speaks people. We hope this lecture helps you all to hold those two things together. So that’s part 2 in a nutshell. It’s a lot of information so bring your mental hard drives.

Good Morning and Happy Wednesday, Zoe HSM fam! This Friday we’re picking up our Night Church Teaching series in Gospel of Matthew. We’re right in the middle of Jesus’s famous teaching called the sermon on the mount. We’re going to try our best to catch what Jesus is saying when he talks about anger and failure. I think he’s getting at the heart of a real human issue, which is our relationship to anger and what we do and think in anger. It has been a challenge for me, and I hope that the trip we take together will be a challenge for you as well! As always, 7:30, bring a friend, bring yourself, bring a snack and we’ll you there

We’re back again this Friday exploring the Gospel according to Matthew. This is the opening section of the famous Sermon on the Mount, probably one of the most famous chunks of Jesus’ teachings. The Sermon explodes right out of Jesus explosive claim that the Kingdom of God is near. And all the awesome and challenging things that Jesus teaches and invites his followers to come and participate in only makes sense within the new reality of the Kingdom! This teaching focuses on the most famous poetic little sayings at the beginning of the Sermon called the Beatitudes. Y’know, the sayings that talk about “blessed are these kinds of people,” and “blessed are those kinds of people.” But what does that even mean, what would it mean for a Jewish prophet rabbi to announce that certain kinds of people are blessed. Or “BlessED” if you’re a King James Version kinda person. Remember these words are so familiar they can often lose their sharpness and power from overuse. So let’s relearn all over again this awesome little section in Matthew. My hope is that they pack a surprise punch, because they certainly did for me! See y’all Friday!

Hey y’all, now that Spring has Sprung we hope that the warmer weather and the sun carry you on over to Zoe High School ministry this Friday! This week, we’re going to continue exploring the Gospel according to Matthew. We’re picking up right where we left of in the second half of Matthew chapter 4. The spotlight here, is on Jesus saying his first public words to the people of Israel. And bursting into the world of Roman occupation is Jesus’ word on the coming of the Kingdom of God (or the reign of God). A good handle on teachings of Jesus on the Kingdom of God, represents a foundationally large part of my own rediscovery of Jesus’ own life and mission and the ethic of the kingdom. So here we are, homies, at ground zero for understanding Jesus the king and what it means to follow this king. “Jesus and the Kingdom of God.” Those words seem simple and they might just wash over you in a wave as christian lingo. But it all starts here. So I encourage you to come along for the ride this friday and maybe bring a friend. So see you Friday and let’s learn!

Today we reflect on Mortality. Death is a refrain that we as human beings are all too familiar with. Even on our best days it’s there happening. Death, whether we like it or not has the capacity to shape us. For some of us these are memories very real and very recent. For others, it’s a far off memory that resurfaces in quiet moments of fear or isolation. As we hold those memories tight, may we hold fast and remember the cross. This Lenten season, may we reflect on Jesus’ death so that it may redefine even death itself and shape us into the people who have the life found in his resurrection.

Happy Fat Tuesday! This means that tomorrow is the beginning of Lent. This season can and should be a time of remembering who we are. That work of remembering often comes with the letting go of things that cannot hold our lives together, though I had depended on them previously. Here we are invited to contemplate Jesus’ mortality culminating in his death on the cross. May this season of lent be a time where we can remind ourselves through fasting of what’s really essential and important!
