RELIGION AVOIDS MESSY PEOPLE.
JESUS SAT AT THEIR TABLE.
That should bother us a little...
Because somewhere along the way, Christianity became really good at telling broken people to clean themselves up before they came close.
Jesus did the opposite.
In Matthew 9, Jesus sits down with tax collectors and sinners.
And the religious people immediately have a problem with it.
“Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
Jesus hears them and answers, “It is not the healthy who need a physician, but the sick.” - Matthew 9:12
Think about that.
A physician does not stand outside the hospital yelling at sick people for being sick.
A physician gets close.
A physician touches what hurts.
A physician goes where the sickness is.
Jesus was not afraid of their mess.
He was not contaminated by their brokenness.
His holiness was powerful enough to enter the mess and bring healing.
And maybe this is where religion still gets it wrong...
Christians sometimes act like people need to become acceptable before they can come near Jesus.
Jesus walked straight toward the people everyone else had written off.
The addicted.
The ashamed.
The rejected.
The skeptical.
The divorced.
The angry.
The confused.
The person who has not been inside a church in years.
The Physician is not intimidated by sick people. That is who He came for.
