All of us are aware of the recent tornado disaster that hit Garland, Rowlett, and other areas east of where most of us live. Most of us also wonder, "What can I do to help?" My own brother-in-law's roof, for example, was completely taken off of the home where he is staying and the house will now be leveled. You may not know that Bent Tree has a LifeGroup in Garland and this group has taken action to help their neighbors in a very tangible way. Last Saturday they helped serve food literally all day and into the night for victims of the storm. They've also been putting care bags together for area storm victims and distributing them. Bill and Teresa Hense lead this LifeGroup in Garland and they called yesterday asking for more help this Saturday January 9th, anytime from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. They will be serving food to area storm victims in the "Church in the City" parking lot located at Dalrock & Hwy 66. You can come during any of those times and stay for as long as you want. For more information please contact Bill & Teresa Hense at 972-495-0486. Of course, let's pray for all the area storm victims. If you would like to give in some way you can make a financial donation through any of these trusted crisis responders: Redcross.org (Choose the "Local Community" option) or text REDCROSS to 90999 to send $10 to NTX Tornado Disaster Relief. Victimrelief.org Trained VRM volunteers are among the first responders on the ground. Of course, your prayers for all of these displaced families are also much needed! Thank you for your help!

Are you wondering how to best care for yourself as you face the next season of your life? Do you know how to best advise and help your parents as they face the challenges of aging?

I know that my wife Margaret and I have had many questions on both fronts, so I’d like to invite you to attend a special seminar at Bent Tree Bible Fellowship this coming Saturday, February 7, from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm.

The seminar will begin with a short devotional by Bent Tree member Richard Brown, followed by a series of breakout sessions including:

• Finances and Social Security, led by Mike Raitt, president and owner of The Almega Group of Companies
• Alzheimer’s and Dementia, led by Vic Mazmanian, senior director of Faith Outreach at Silverado Care and leader of the Mind, Heart, and Soul Ministry at Saddleback Church
• “The Conversation,” regarding funeral pre-planning, led by Cheryl Devoto, a family services counselor for Dignity Memorial

Participants can also sign up for one-on-one meetings with the three presenters. A 30-minute Q&A session will begin at noon, followed by door prizes at the close of our time.

Registration for Turning Point is available http://benttree.org/event/308191735/ for $5.

On-site registration begins Saturday, February 7 at 8:30 a.m.

Have you ever tried to understand where the prophets and writings fit into the Old Testament historical books or how a history of the people of Israel applies to Christians today? Dallas Theological Seminary graduate Fred Villa has prepared this study “Understanding the Old Testament: A Chronological Survey with Life Application” complete with a workbook including charts, graphs, maps and timelines that will help you better understand and apply the Old Testament to your life today. After this 12-week study, each learner will be able to understand the individual parts of God’s Word as well as place the parts into the story as a whole. Each prophet and writing will be placed chronologically within the books of history where they belong. Open to all ages.
