The first of the forty days of Lent, named for the custom of placing blessed ashes on the foreheads of worshipers at Ash Wednesday services. The ashes are a sign of penitence and a reminder of mortality, and may be imposed with the sign of the cross. Ash Wednesday.

January 6th is the Feast of the Epiphany marking the end of Christmas and the day the 3 Wise Men visited the Christ Child. These 3 men were not Jews, as Jesus was. The Epiphany was the realization the Christ Child, Jesus, was for all the peoples of the world, not only the Jews.
