In the autumn of 1882 a small group of Romanian immigrants settled in Jamestown. The following spring they moved into the Carrington area on land known later as Longview Township. They started a Sunday School and held services in their sod homes until later moving to a school house. The First German Baptist Church was organized with 13 charter members on November 2, 1884, five years before North D
akota became a state. In 1900 a church building was constructed and in 1909 the congregation incorporated as Pleasant Valley German Baptist Church. Serving as lay pastor was August Leibig. As more and more church members moved into the city, a congregation formed there as well, and in 1920 this group purchased a church building from St. John's Lutheran Church at the corner of First Street North and Eighth Avenue site. The parsonage, which had been built in 1914, was moved to town in 1938. Services were held in both the Carrington and Pleasant Valley church buildings until in 1944 the Pleasant Valley church was dismantled and the lumber used to expand the church in town. In 1945 the name was officially changed to Calvary Baptist Church. In 1962 the Calvary Baptist building was expanded, using lumber from the former German Brethren Church building. In 1975 the building was refurbished inside and outside. In 2003 Calvary Baptist completed a new building project on Main Street. A former grocery store building was transformed into classrooms and a fellowship hall, and a sanctuary was added as new construction. A total of 20 pastors have served the church since 1884, and several members of the congregation have entered the ministry or served on the mission field. TO GOD BE THE GLORY
